1) why does escapeshellarg(string arg) add quotes around arg? (the
PHP.net manual didn't make me wiser), is it a *nix thingy? (alas, I'm
still using Windows)
Under Windows (I can't speak for *nix), it's very possible to have
pathnames or filename with embedded blanks (and maybe other troublesome
characters) that will cause problems.
Try putting one of the files into something like "c:\test files\" and
run based on that. Without the quotes, I expect you will have problems
with certain types of extensions.
However, it appears the command line program you're using can't handle
such paths/files, and thus chokes on the quotes.
