Run it every minute. The default is really only good if you do not have
access to cron at all.

And right you are. It is the FlaggegRevs extension. I had to install it to
do some work. Then when I disabled it, everything went back to normal. Also
the default skin was set as Vector. I changed some of the settings in the
LocalSettings.php file. I did not disable the Vector skin. Just converted
all of the site to Metrolook. Much nicer. Thanks for the tips.

Well this is something I've not run into before. I recently set up and
upgraded my mediawiki site from an in house server to a remote server.
Everything went pretty well till today. In getting rid of a few bugs, I
tried adding the extension multiupload to my new server . Mediawiki 1.27
stable Mysql/Maria, with php7 on The stable Ubunti 16.xx server. It did not
work so I dumped it. However I also did add FlaggedRevs, and a new
Scribunto. Both of those seem to be OK. However after I restarted apache
and rebooted the server, ran the update.php : the sideabr is no longer
displayed at the side, it is instaead, down at the bottom, still vertically
displayed. I tried a complete refresh of the Main page as I keep an
identicle server running to work from. No help; still is not displayed
properly. Any toips are greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Greetings,
quick intro: I have been a mediawiki user for a long time (wikipedia and
within companies) but I only had a couple of stints at administering one. I
am in the process of setting one up for my neighborhood - or about 65
families.
It pretty much all works but as my neighbors includes anything from very
hightech people to very lowtech grandpas I have to put extra-care in making
sure there are no counter-intuitive things happening.
One of the counter-intuitive things that -is- happening is that when I
create a new page from a pre-existing redlink the link does not become blue
until I use the /purge action in the URL. I checked with showJobs.php and
the job to update the page's cache is there. Somehow however, the jobs do
not get triggered. I.e. as $wgJobRunRate is set to the default (1), every
http request should take one job off the queue, right? But I'm not seeing
this. It seems like the queue just gets longer.
I'm wondering, is this perhaps something that has to do with short urls?
(they are otherwise functional) Or anything else in my .htaccess? It just
seems like mediawiki doesn't see some page reloads or some newly created
pages as enough to trigger the jobs queue to move forward.
Thoughts?
Kind regards,
Manu
On my Mediawiki install, I cannot compare versions. The "(Difference between
revisions)" page shows only the latest version.
I checked that I do have diff:
~# which diff
/usr/bin/diff
~# which diff3
/usr/bin/diff3
~# grep diff /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php
# Path to the GNU diff3 utility. Used for conflict resolution.
$wgDiff3 = "/usr/bin/diff3";
I also added
$wgDiff = "/usr/bin/diff";
to LocalSettings.php.
This is Mediawiki version 1.19.20+dfsg-2.3 on Debian Jessie.
After turning on debugging, I see this:
wfShellExec: 'wikidiff2' '/tmp/diff_N41UBc' '/tmp/diff_HtzBTH'
Possibly missing executable file: 'wikidiff2' '/tmp/diff_N41UBc' '/tmp/diff_HtzBTH'
Indeed, I have no such executable. But "apt-cache search wikidiff2" shows only
"php-wikidiff2", which is installed.
~# apt-cache search wikidiff2
php-wikidiff2 - external diff engine for mediawiki
So, would someone know what is wrong, or where to look for more clues?
I'm getting the following error when trying to go to /Special:UserLogin
with mediaWiki 1.27.

Other pages, including the ones which display ReCaptcha, work fine.
/Special:UserLogin used to work on this site, and started to malfunction
a couple of days ago.
ReCaptcha is enabled with:
wfLoadExtensions( array( 'ConfirmEdit', 'ConfirmEdit/ReCaptchaNoCaptcha'
) );
$wgCaptchaClass = 'ReCaptchaNoCaptcha';
$wgReCaptchaSiteKey = 'SiteKey.............';
$wgReCaptchaSecretKey = 'SecretKey...........';
Not sure how to deal with it - does anyone have any idea? A different
MediaWiki install on the same server works fine for /Special:UserLogin.

Yes, I have reset the file extensions otherwise I cannot upload them. As to
follow your advice, I just run the update.php. Several bugs shown in the
log file but nothing related to the thumbnails. Thumbnails still cannot be
created.

Hi Greg,
Thank you for your response! I tried the suggestions, but still facing same
problems. Were there any further suggestions?
I already changed the owner to be www-data, set log files and rebuilt
images.
I got debug logs like follows:
"...
FSFileBackend::getFileListInternal() given directory does not exist:
'/var/www/HIWeb/dir/wiki/images/3/3e'
FSFileBackend::getFileListInternal() given directory does not exist:
'/var/www/HIWeb/dir/wiki/images/3/3f'
FSFileBackend::getFileListInternal() given directory does not exist:
'/var/www/HIWeb/dir/wiki/images/4/40'
FSFileBackend::getFileListInternal() given directory does not exist:
'/var/www/HIWeb/dir/wiki/images/4/41'
FSFileBackend::getFileListInternal() given directory does not exist:
'/var/www/HIWeb/dir/wiki/images/4/42'
..."
I think the log is reasonable and tell no more issues.
Btw, what the "preview" means in the last post was: when you open a
"File:xxxx.png" page, it should show a preview image directly on the page.
But I have no preview images and thumbnails currently.
Thanks,
Jingyi
---------- My original question ----------
Hi all,
Thanks to some help about my previous thumbnails question: "I uploaded a
png image but no thumbnails created in the File page."
I have tried several methods but the thumbnails are still not working. I
still face the problems that I have neither thumbnails or preview images in
'File:' pages.
I have already installed ImageMagick in my Ubuntu.
What I have tried was to:
1. check wiki/images/thumb/ folder, but only old thumbnails are there.
(Yes, I used to have thumbnails several month ago.) No new ones that I
uploaded recently are there.
2. chowe -R root:root wiki/images/ and chmod -R 777 /wiki/images/
2. change memory consumption by increasing $wgMaxShellMemory to 409600 in
LocalSetting.php, but still no thumbnails appears.
So here are my new questions:
1. Small images (like 500kb) can sometimes have previews (but no
thumbnails). But large images always no previews. How to fix?
2. I have a strange finding. Some jpg images can show the previews in my
home computer but cannot show previews in my office computer. What may
cause that?
3. My current MW version is 1.26. And my PHP version is a little bit out of
date: 5.3.10. May this cause a problem related to previews and thumbnails?
Looking forward to your further help.
Thank you,
Jingyi

Actually, the images directory (and subdirectories) should be owned by the
web server user (that's *www-data* for Ubuntu)
If you enter the command
ps aux | egrep '(apache|httpd)'
and look at the first column, you'll be able to confirm that your webserver
is running as www-data
Then you can change ownership on the directory and subdirectories like so:
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data ./wiki/images
In general, you should setup a debug log file[1] to find out what's going
wrong with MediaWiki.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'previews'. When you upload a file into
MediaWiki via Special:Upload, it simply stores the file on the webserver
and generates thumbnails as configured. Those thumbnails get stored in the
"thumbs" directory on the server. When you go to *Special:ListFiles* (e.g.
https://freephile.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles), it will show a list of
uploaded files, with a thumbnail representation of each file.
Since you are having problems with your file uploads and thumbnail
generation, you should probably run the 'rebuildImages' script in the
maintenance folder.
cd wiki/maintenance
php ./rebuildImages --dry-run
php ./rebuildImages --missing
I have issues creating thumbnails and I got some new findings when checking
the images/thumb/ folder and the Special:ListFiles page.
I found that:
Before 24 May 2016, all thumbnails can be correctly created. Every image I
uploaded had 120px, 180px, 320px, 500px, ..., 2000px thumbnails stored in
/images/thumb.
On 25 May, only 120px thumbnails can be created and stored.
After 28 July, no thumbnails were created.
(I did no uploading between 25 May and 28 July.)
Is there any thumb/ folder storage limitation? What may cause this strange
problem?
Thanks,
Jingyi

Hi John,
Yes. I tried both 775 and 777 already. but neither of them worked.
