MediaWiki is now using a "continuous integration" development model with
quarterly snapshot releases. The latest development code is always kept
"ready to run", and in fact runs our own sites on Wikipedia.
Release branches will continue to receive security updates for about a year
from first release, but nonessential bugfixes and feature development happen
will be made on the development trunk and appear in the next quarterly release.
Those wishing to use the latest code instead of a branch release can obtain
it from source control: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Download_from_SVN

The images in skins/common/images/icons don't match between the release
tarball and the subversion repo.
Issue these two commands to see one difference. The PNG files in the
tarball are one byte larger. What's going on?

to using a subversion WC, and comparing my installation to the freshly
checked-out WC shows these anomalies. Here's a complete list of the

What structure does anyone suggest for multilingual pages in development
versions?
I have successfully got basic language links of the type [[fr:My French Main
Page]] working, (thanks jdd, 22/03/2006), by adding rows into the interwiki
table with values "fr" and
"http://localhost/fr/mediawiki-1.5.6/index.php/$1". Now, when I add [[fr:My
French Main Page]] to the Main Page of the English version, I get an entry
in the "other languages" side bar which looks like "Francais" but which
links to http://localhost/mediawiki-1.5.6/index.php/Main_Page".
For production type pages the structure seems clear,
en -> mywiki.com or en.mywiki.com
fr -> fr.mywiki.com
nl ->nl.mywiki.com
etc.
But what does it usually look like in development?
en -> localhost/mywiki/index.php
fr -> localhost/fr/index.php or localhost/index.php/fr or what??
And then is there any easy way to make the settings in the wikilink
directory the same for development and production versions?
Thanks!
Do you work with subversion or CVS? Can't find the newest version under
SourceForge?
I would make some translation to german, where i put the translations down?
SourceForge?
Thomas Klein
My mediawiki is hosted by my domain host, and they offer a backup service.
However, I'm not sure what format to use to backup the database so that it
can be easily restored. They offer several. Any suggestions?
Thanks
I'm not clear on this -- If we want to test the update, should we still
use the snapshot linked by Brion, or should we used the fixed SVN head
revision? And if so, how do we get that revision as a tarball?

Fixed in SVN HEAD.

This is my first post here so ... hello and a big thank you to the
everyone involved in the development of mediawiki.
-----------------------------------
I am thinking of significantly modifying the way categories are
handled on my mediawiki site and i'm looking for advice, insights,
warnings etc about my plan.
There are two things i'm trying to achieve:
1) Create a category manager for articles that would allow users with
no understanding of wikitext to easily update an article's
categories. I would continue to use the categorylinks table as it
exists. But i would have a link on each article page to a custom
Special page that allowed users to add/remove categories for that
article. I would disable the parsing of category links on article
pages so that my custom Special page was the only way for users to
update categories.
2) Create numeric categories that can have units associated with them
and can be sorted and manipulated as integers. These categories would
need to have both a name and a value. The name would exist in the
current categorylinks table just like any other category. However, i
would build new tables to hold the values and units for these numeric
categories. Examples: Volume: 12 oz, Storage capacity 128 mb.
It seems like i *should* be ok as long as i ...
a) don't modify the structure of the categorylinks table
b) rely on the built in functions of mediawiki to add and remove
items from the table
c) create a special page to manage categories (rather than messing
with the internals of mediawiki)
I say this knowing fairly little about mediawiki. So please tell me
if i'm missing something very important here.
A few questions ...
Has anyone here made similar changes to the category system?
Can anyone know point me towards any documentation that would help me
out?
Are there any current plans to redesign the way categories are
managed in a future version of mediawiki? Will categories continue to
be managed through the wiki text of the articles themselves for the
forseeable future?
thanks
I have updated mediawiki 1.5.8 and it worked so far without big
problems.
However one thing is strange: the 2 Images which i had placed on the
main page for testing with 1.5.8 could not be found with 1.6.
I get the following error:
###
Error creating thumbnail: /usr/local/bin/convert: Unable to open file
(path_to_image1_here) [Invalid argument]. Error creating thumbnail:
/usr/local/bin/convert: Unable to open file (path_to_image2_here)
[Invalid argument].
###
The strange thing about this is: if i choose "edit" and "preview" the
pictures appear on the page. if i choose "save" i get the error.
I use the following image tags:
[[Image:imagename.jpg|200px|imagenamewith comment]]
(I am using mysql 4.0.26-max, mac os x 10.3.9, PHP 4.4.1)
