Hello,
Only users have edit rights in my wiki, but this week I've received a lot of
spam from new accounts. Is the most annoying spam: revert, change passwords
and see a lot of strange accounts in the users list. I can delete it? --the
documentation says «Do not remove users from the user table in the mySQL
database; this causes problems with other parts of the wiki due to the
relational structure of the database.»
But I've seen the captcha tool in the mediawiki create account page. For this
reason I've upgraded from 1.4 to the last version 1.5.7, but I don't see the
captcha in my new MediaWiki. Anyone knows how to locate and insall this
captcha for the new account creation page? In the FAQ page says «There is no
other way with the current software»
Thanks!

The hard-disk with my WIMP Installation of MediaWiki 1.5 (inside a WAN
setup) has just died, so I am planning to rebuild (using backups of the
MySQL database - MySQL 4.1). I am wondering whether to install MySQL
5.0.18instead, and wondered whether there were likely to be any
problems with
that. I have read the MySQL upgrading advice (
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/upgrading-from-4-1.html), and it
mentions running a *mysql_upgrade* script. However, I will be reading the
dump into the new MySQL, so I am not sure whether that still applies and if
so whether I should just import and then run the script. Does anyone else
have experience of this that they could share? I read the archives and noted
that Jan Steinman and Brion Vibber discussed having issues with MySQL 5.0.16
.
My original installation used PHP 5.0.4, and I am planning to upgrade that
as well to PHP 5.1.2. Does anyone have any comments on that?
To complete the information, the Win2003 server is using
IIS6.0(administrator's choice, but it should make it easier to support
a simple
creation of users based on network usernames).
Any guidance much appreciated.
Regards,
Andrew
Hello all, just wondeirng if MediaWiki 1.5x had any way to list a
subcategory that was in both its main category AND in a specific main
category. eg, If [[page1]] is in [[Category:MainCat]] AND in
[[Category:SubCat]] display it on the listing page like

Check your browser to see if it's got the right fonts set. For most
browser, the default is to use a fixed-width font in edit boxes.
I am working on creating an extension that tries to return a list of
links to high use pages in mediawiki version 1.41.0. I do this by
querying the recent changes tables and extracting titles for with the
namespace is 0 and it is not a minor edit. The basic form of my
extension is <highusepages>user|10</highusepages> Where the user is
optional and the number tell the number of pages to return.
My query is of the form:
SELECT DISTINCT this.`rc_title`
FROM(SELECT `rc_title`
FROM `recentchanges`
WHERE `rc_namespace` = 0 AND `rc_minor` = 0
ORDER BY `rc_timestamp` DESC) this
LIMIT {$numberofPages}"
My question is that my function to run the query only runs when I edit
and save the page. Is there anyway to have this query of function run
every time you reload the page? Is there a better way to do this?
Thanks,
Mike
Hi there!
I am working on my Masters Project for Kent State University, and my project
is to develop a wiki for their public radio station specifically dealing
with folk music.
I¹m struggling to find a way to pre-populate it with the vast information
already available on Wikipedia (or if it¹s even possible).
I see Wikipedia has an API, which would allow me access to their
information... but I don¹t know if this would fit our needs.
I also see they have a dump of the entire system, but I don¹t know if you
can pull out just the information you want.
Finally if neither of these are good possibilities, are there any good
suggestions how to go about building a wiki from the ground up to
eventually be the home for folk music on the web? :)
Thanks,
Roger Zender

hi all,
i'd like to redirect the user to a page if a wiki message is displayed.
In my case I need to redirect a user to special:userlogin if the message 'loginreqtext' is displayed.
Therefor I changed MediaWiki:Loginreqtext and inserted there a redirect, but it didn't work.
I'm using mw Version 1.5.6
Any ideas how to solve the problem?
Thanks in advance
