Perhaps at a later stage aliases

So you suggest to handle a alias-redirect page as a
list with "every term inside point to main article"?
Aliases would probably just be a section of the main
article or something like [[Alias:Foo]] [[Alias:Bar]] in
any place just like with Categories now. But yes (:
We could then insert synonyms and equivalent
expression too. Sounds a good idea: a redirect seems
to be an alias anyway.
Yes I think it seems best to keep the current inner
workings of Redirects but to take away the direct
interface to them, replacing it with the Aliases interface.
What about typing errors handling? A fuzzy system
would be easier then guessing all the possible
mispellings and inserting them.
Now this would be much trickier. I think that should
exist in the search functionality. If the title as typed
doesn't exactly match any article (or Redirect/Alias),
then suggest the closest matches by the same
techniques used by Aspell for instance.
It would be best of all if there were sysop-editable
pages which provided control over the suggestions
for per-language handling.
