Daniel-
But the current implementation, even with the
"Click a button to get an example text" is non-intuitive
I'd be more interested in hearing ways to make it more intuitive than
"turn it off for these browsers". I suspect that your reaction is more the
result of already knowing that the selection+click feature works in some
browsers, so I'd like to see some broader usability results (i.e. having
it on by default with the current setup for a couple of weeks) before I
draw any conclusions.
If it turns out that users don't find this way of learning the syntax
helpful, then we have to either develop a better way, or turn it off for
the ~5% of users who can't use the full fledged toolbar. Note, however,
that with the current script, as soon as your browser starts supporting
the necessary JavaScript, you will automatically get the selection+click
feature.
If we implement a "don't show toolbar based on browser" feature, this is
not possible, we then have to manually distinguish browser versions and
keep up to date on the level of support in each browser -- high
maintenance. I'd much prefer it if you would lobby e.g. the Konqueror
folks to implement startSelection+endSelection, see
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71451
It's really a pretty important feature for a browser to have.
