If they're not idiots, we should be giving them full admin rights, not just rollback.

Why isn't a rollback user group enabled on Wikipedia, and a
[[Wikipedia:Requests for rollback]] page made, so that we can allow
non-admins to get rollback access, as long as they aren't idiots?
It looks like it would just require this line in the settings to me...
$wgGroupPermissions['rollback']['rollback'] = true;
We get a *lot* of vandalism. We should be doing everything we can to
help users fight the vandals off.

I have created a standalone Wikipedia which could become the foundation
af a DVD release or a desktop/intranet version of Wikipedia, currently
Windows only (but should be easy to adapt to Linux/Mac).
I don't have anywhere to put a DVD image, so you'll have to bake your
own. All you need is my software (based on tinyweg and sqlite, running a
real, unpatched MediaWiki) [1] (ca. 6MB) and a XML dump of wikipedia (I
recommend [2], ca. 762 MB). Download both, uncompress the software (no
need to uncompress the XML file!), and follow the instructions in the
README file.
Some issues:
* The creation of the package takes time (think "over night") and disk
space (~2.5GB)
* Page rendering is a little slow, but bearable, roughly depending on
the number of links on a page
* No images
* It doesn't run directly from DVD, as tinyweb insists on writing log
files; you'll have to keep the whole thing on hard disk
Things that don't work but which should be easy to do (for someone with
time on their hands)
* Interwiki links are renderd as "red links" (should be fixable in
LocalSettings.php)
* Search doesn't work (should be fixable by patching MediaWiki, at least
for title search)
Technical note: The conversion software (GPL, but source not yet
included - too messy) generates a sqlite database with everything BUT
the page texts. These are copied into a single large text file, and the
database additionally stores the position of the respective text. That
turns out to be the fastest way to query the database. I tried reading
from a compressed text file, but the performance was horrible as there's
no way to directly seek a position in a compressed file.

Boston (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2006/Boston) and
Toronto (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2006/Toronto) have
been shortlisted to host the 2006 edition of Wikimania.
Wikimania 2006 will be the second international Wikimedia conference
and will gather members of the Wikimedia community acorss projects as
well as participants and speakers from different horizons to talk
about wikis and more. An overview of the 2005 edition can be found at
http://wikimania.wikimedia.org.
Contrarily to what was announced on the Wikimania page
(http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2006), and due to tight
schedules of the jury from 3 corners of the planet, the jury might not
be able to meet and give its answer on the 15th october as was
planned.
This will only be delayed a day or two, please stay tuned for an update.
In the meantime, participants and others are free to ask/answer
questions on the talk pages of the Boston

Toronto (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimania_2006/Toronto)

Hi,

I just had a look at the main page - in this moment it shows 100 pages
:-) of course many of them are still stubs, but well, things are going
ahead :-)
(for those of you who do not receive the newsletter in Neapolitan
language and would like to receive it, please let me know sending a
private message).
Ciao, Sabine

Hello, I would like to bring to your attention a situation where there are
clear violations of the principles of WP, and abuse of power by some sysops.
There are some members (mainly Spanish) who have embarked upon a campaign of
vandalism on the Spanish version of the Gibraltar article. They are using
this article to spread Spanish anti-Gibraltar propaganda, lies, and insults
to the people of Gibraltar. Even when posts are true, they are as far from
NPOV as they can get.
Gibraltarians have been accused variously of being smugglers, money
launderers, we all live from illegal and/or illicit activity, we ignore EU
law, we have stolen land from Spain (and territorial waters, and airspace),
the British troops have even been accused of ethnic cleansing!
WP is not a discussion forum, certainly less an anti-Gibraltar forum. If
this is what these people want they should find another forum for it. When I
have edited text I have been accused of vandalism simply because I do not
share the Spanish vision (or delusion). They act as if they had formed a
tribe or bully group, and between them seem to think that they somehow
own the article and only those editions that match their views are
allowed.
As if this wasnt enough 3 sysops in particular, Dodo, Ecemaml, & Sanbec are
abusing their position and blocking my access. Their attitude and behaviour
is totally unacceptable.
I request help from anyone able to, as serious violations of WP policy are
being committed by them. I request that these people be told that they do
not have the right to own WP articles, nor unjustifiably block a user just
because he shares differing views to you. No doubt they will invent some
excuse to justify their actions, but there is no justification.
I thank you for your help.
A Gibraltarian

Differences between standard Serbian and Croatian are larger than
just differences of ekavian/ijekavian. A text in Serbian converted
to ijekavian feels to us just a little less Serbian (somewhat Bosnian)
than the original, it's not somehow magically transformed into
Croatian. And please, don't throw NPOV phrases at me, because how
on earth are you going to NPOV-ize loads of technical, scientific
and everyday vocabulary, syntax etc.? Do you plan to write slashes
between variants? Write the same sentence twice? Believe me,
all of this has been tried before, immense force, threats, everything
was applied and the end result was the same – zero.
