Dear Friends,
On behalf of the WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba_Steering_Committee>), I would
like to announce that the next WikiIndaba Conference
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba> for 2022 will be organised by
Wikimedia Usergroup Rwanda. The conference will take place between 4 and 6
November 2022 in a hybrid format where participants will attend online and
in person in Kigali, Rwanda.
This comes after an invitation to bid was sent to all African affiliates by
WISCom early in April, and several good and deserving candidates responded.
A rigorous selection process then followed which considered several factors
including candidates’ motivational statements, capacity to host the
conference, bringing the conference to a region where it has not been held
before and if there were national elections planned in the applicant's
country for this year.
More details about scholarships and programme will be provided later.
We look forward to supporting and working with Wikimedia UG Rwanda to
ensure the conference becomes a success.
Best regards,
Bobby Shabangu

Dear all,
We are excited to be dropping the second episode
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WIKIMOVE/Podcast>of WIKIMOVE, the new
podcast on everything Wikimedia Movement Strategy.
What’s in this episode?
Wiki Movimento Brasil surveyed the Portuguese speaking communities about
some of the big juicy concepts in the MS20230 recommendations - equity in
decision making, leadership development and diversity. By doing that, they
reached many community members not previously engaged. In this pod they
talk about the insights, opportunities and challenges that emerged. These
Wikimedians are showing the way of how we can make the strategy come to
life at community level, and jointly figure out what our next steps are
locally and regionally. resources. We also talk about money, building
communities and the Movement Charter Drafting Committee….
Our guests are…
Érica Azzellini, Community Manager at Wiki Movimento Brasil
Érica is in charge of community support, partnerships and strategy
development at Wiki Movimento Brasil. She is also a member of the movement
charter drafting committee.
Lucas Piantá, Wiki Movimento Brazil’s Strategy Working Group
Works as researcher on the movement strategy implementation in the
lusophone community. He serves on a number of committees including the
Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Committee.

Hello everyone,
*TL;DR*: Given the community need for in-person events, we are opening a
3rd funding round for Conference funds for events taking place in September
- December 2022. This condensed round will be for events already in
planning. Proposal deadline is June 13, but you are encouraged to submit
your proposal earlier if possible.
________
Recently we announced the removal of the Covid travel restrictions
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/03/29/announcement-of-the-removal-of-the-co…>,
and we are now welcoming proposals to support travel again. Since the
announcement, we have heard many communities expressing the urgency and
desire to convene and resume plans of hosting in-person global events.
We wish to respond to that need, and therefore, we have decided to open a
3rd funding round for Conference Fund 2022, to allow communities who have
already started planning their events for the last quarter of 2022, an
opportunity to submit a proposal.
*This will be an expedited round, *meaning - shorter turnaround time, *for
events already in planning* for late 2022.
This condensed round is designed to support events in September - December,
so we have to be able to finalize decisions by June.
We know what it takes to organize and host a global event. It requires a
lot of capacity, time, volunteers, and planning resources. If you haven’t
started organizing your conference, or if you have the option to delay it
until the next round in September - we highly encourage you to take the
time you need to properly plan.
*Who should consider applying to the 3rd round?*
- If you already have event planning underway for September - December
2022, with a clear vision, capacity to organize and a proven community
interest.
- If you started planning this event 2 years ago and had to pause due to
the pandemic, and now can undertake the effort quickly.
- If you started planning a small scale event, limited by the previous
restrictions, and now wish to adjust your existing plans to include
international travel that can be coordinated easily, and require more
funding.
This new round *will not replace* round 1 for 2022-2023 (proposal deadline
is September 5 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference>). So if
you are thinking of hosting an event in early 2023 - you should wait for
the September round.
*The 3rd round timeline:*
June 13, 2022 - proposal deadline
June 14 - June 28, 2022 - Staff eligibility review and feedback
June 29 - July 6, 2022 - Revision
July 6 - July 12, 2022 - Finalizing + Announcements
You are welcome to submit your proposal before June 13. The sooner you
submit and inform us, higher the chances we can process your application
faster.

Hello fellow Wikimedians, librarians, bibliophiles, and information
enthusiasts,
The May round of the 2022 1Lib1Ref <https://1lib1ref.org/> starts just
tomorrow 15 May 2022 and will run until 5th June 2022. Are you going to be
joining us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia's content for the
billions of readers who rely on Wikipedia as a source of information?
In the past year or so we have been piloting different modes of
participation in the campaign. In May 2021 we encouraged adding sources on
Wikidata, in January 2022 we improved on that, added opportunities to
create Wikidata items related to works on Wikisource, and added 9 new
languages from the CEE on citation hunt
<https://citationhunt.toolforge.org/en?id=3c84e6ae>. We are
encouraging the addition
of references to decrease gender bias on Wikipedia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Participate#…>
and 12 new languages from Africa, and Asia in the upcoming May round.
If you are already familiar with the campaign or editing on Wikipedia and
would like to experiment a bit, we invite you to try our new contribution
methods for advanced contributors
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Participate#…>
in the May 2022 round.
If you are an organizer, remember to add your local event(s) to the campaign
dashboard
<https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/1lib1ref_may_2022/overview>,
so we can learn and track activities happening across the world. Read more
about the campaign at the blog post on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/11/the-may-round-for-1lib1ref-is-back-wi…>
.
Join us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia articles one source at a
time!

Mike,
The new course platform is really "intended to serve the entire Wikimedia movement!" - opposite to what you believe; you have access
via your Wikimedia account. The platform is a real MOOC platform, unlike other MediaWiki powered sites.

Dear all,
We are pleased to inform you that the affiliate participants' list for the
hybrid Wikimedia Summit
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Summit_2022/Participants%27_list>[1]
is now available on Meta. This list indicates the number of on-site and
online representatives for each affiliate. A detailed explanation of the
application review process has also been published.
As pointed out in our announcement
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org…>[2]
and the application form, all answers provided to the three questions
around Movement Strategy will be published on Meta next week. This overview
of each affiliate’s interest and engagement in Wikimedia 2030 creates
transparency in the application process, indicates opportunities for
exchange and partnerships, and will inform the Summit program.
== Registration for on-site participation ==
The registration process will start next week. Each participant travelling
to Berlin will receive an individual access link to fill out the
registration form on our event platform. These are personal access links,
please do not share them. All questions concerning visa requirements and
travel management should be directed to us via the event platform only,
using the chat function.
== Registration for online participation ==
If your affiliate is eligible but you missed the application deadline,
please send us an email at wmsummit(a)wikimedia.de to let us know that you
would like to attend the Summit online. Each eligible affiliate will be
able to send up to 3 representatives to attend the meeting.[3] More
information about the registration process for online attendance will
follow in July.
The application and registration process is conducted in a time of
transformation for our movement. We very much look forward to the moment
when the movement charter eventually outlines equitable rules and processes
for participation in what we assume will be the movement’s annual general
meeting.
We can’t wait to see you – both online and on-site during the Summit!
Kind regards,
The Wikimedia Summit team
