This month's presentation is a panel discussion celebrating Wikidata's 10th
birthday!
October 2022 marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of Wikidata (
www.wikidata.org). In ten years, this project has become the largest
community-driven free knowledge graph in the world, enabling a common
knowledge base for Wikimedia projects. The language-independent nature of
Wikidata has greatly improved the maintenance and consistency of knowledge
across Wikipedia language editions, fostering knowledge equity in
Wikimedia. In addition, since Wikidata is a collaborative project that can
be read and edited by humans and machines alike, it is also widely used in
third-party applications delivering knowledge as a service for all. The
Wikimedia Research community has devoted significant effort and resources
in studying the foundations, capabilities and applications of Wikidata,
from the complex requirements of representing real-world knowledge in a
multilingual environment to the needs to assess the quality of data and
sources in Wikidata. To learn more about the state of the art of Wikidata
and research challenges in the era of AI/ML, we will celebrate this tenth
anniversary with a panel that will bring together established
researchers/practitioners in this field.
The panel will be moderated by Denny Vrandečić (WMF) with panelists Lydia
Pintscher (WMDE), Elena Simperl (King's College London), Katherine Thornton
(Yale), and Markus Krötzsch (Technical University of Dresden).

are looking for members. People are encouraged to nominate themselves or
encourage others they feel would contribute to these groups to do so. There
is more information below about the opportunity and the skills that are
needed.
About the Ombuds commission
The Ombuds commission (OC) works on all Wikimedia projects to investigate
complaints about violations of the privacy policy, especially in use of
CheckUser <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CheckUser_policy> and Oversight
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Oversight_policy> (also known as
Suppression) tools. The Commission mediates between the parties of the
investigation and, when violations of the policies are identified, advises
the Wikimedia Foundation on best handling. They may also assist the General
Counsel, the Chief Executive Officer, or the Board of Trustees of the
Foundation in these investigations when legally necessary. For more on the

Volunteers serving in this role should be experienced Wikimedians, active
on any project, who have previously used the CheckUser/Oversight tools OR
who have the technical ability to understand these tools and the
willingness to learn them. They must be able to communicate in English, the
common language of the commission. They are expected to be able to engage
neutrally in investigating these concerns and to know when to recuse when
other roles and relationships may cause conflict. Commissioners will
serve two-year
terms (note that this is different from past years, when the terms have
been for one year).
About the Case Review Committee
The Case Review Committee (CRC) reviews appeals of eligible Trust & Safety
office actions. The CRC is a critical layer of oversight to ensure that
Wikimedia Foundation office actions are fair and unbiased. They also make
sure the Wikimedia Foundation doesn’t overstep established practices or

We are looking for current or former functionaries and experienced
volunteers with an interest in joining this group. Applicants must be
fluent in English (additional languages are a strong plus) and willing to

Hi everyone,
i would like to share some quite important *GLAM informations* from
Wikimedia France. We are working on open content projects since several
months and are pleased to present a *report relative to open content* in
french GLAMs and the *« Label Culture Libre »* which will be open for
applications from 27 October 2022.
This*label *will be the first one in France *dedicated to cultural
institutions that integrate open content and Wikimedia projects *in
their digital practices. This project is part of a global initiative to
raise awareness of open content, the first step of which was the
publication of the open content report, produced by the Phare agency on
behalf of and in partnership with Wikimedia France. Wikimedia France's
open content strategy will be completed by the creation of an
*observatory in 2023*.
In order to better understand the stakes of the label and the steps to
apply, we propose a special webinar on November 24, 2022 to the french GLAM.

Label Culture Libre
In order to support and promote these initiatives, Wikimedia France has
developed the Label Culture Libre, the first label aimed at museums,
libraries and archives, which rewards open content and collaborative
digital initiatives.
From the choice of the free license to the use of collaborative digital
tools, this path expresses the convergence of the operational needs of
cultural institutions and the evolution of the general public's uses.
The Label Culture Libre is supported by our partners: Creative Commons
France, Club Innovation & Culture CLIC France, and inno3.
Open content report
The "Report on open content in cultural institutions in France - State
of play of digital practices and open content" proposes to evaluate the
state of play, the scope and the promises made by open content in
France. On April 26, 2022, Wikimedia France and the Phare agency
proposed a restitution of the work to 130 cultural actors, at the
National Institute of Art History, in Paris.
The report gives an overview of the practices and explores the
motivations, obstacles and circumstances of these practices. It is also
a guide of good (and bad) practices.
Among its findings, we discover that an average of 85% of GLAMs
(Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) digitize their works and 76%
put them online. On the other hand, only one third (31%) of the
institutions adopt free licenses.
The study goes beyond the panorama and proposes perspectives for the
future as well as a few ways to adapt GLAM to the new uses of
collaborative digital technology.

Hi all,
I'm writing to inquire about the status of the Knowledge Equity Fund.
Meta (1) suggests 6 grants were made in September 2021 and that a second
more community-focused round of grants would be made in 2022. No details of
a second round have been published that I'm aware of; is this still active?
Are there any public details of impact or progress reporting from the
September 2021 grants ?
There is also a somewhat-viral Twitter thread which focuses, alongside some
general criticisms of Wikimedia fundraising, on two grants specifically
from this fund and the WMF making itself a participant in US 'culture
wars'. (2) I wonder if there is any response from the WMF to that?
(For what it's worth, my perception is that the Knowledge Equity Fund was
initially a deliberate attempt led by US-based staff to have the WMF 'do
something' to align itself with a broader progressive movement in the USA.
I believe the main advocates for this have now departed, that it was never
a particularly good fit with the WMF's overall approach to grantmaking,
that the evolution of the WMF's approach to this fund was positive, but
still if the whole thing is now forgotten about that's probably no bad
thing).

program called the Organizer Lab

experience, who believe in the potential of the Wikimedia movement to
effectively mobilize around Topics for Impact

and who are keen to improve their skills to organize at the international
level.
Why an Organizer Lab?
Campaigns and other topic-based calls to action have been some of the most
impactful organized activities in the Wikimedia movement. However, as
observed consistently across Foundation grantmaking programs and in other
community settings, we hear organizers asking for additional support for
designing programs that successfully recruit and retain new contributors
drawn to address specific knowledge gaps on the projects, and which can
join with other movement activities beyond their local context.
Additionally, the Organizer Lab is aligned with other Movement Strategy
priorities and Foundation investment areas:

It is designed to generate replicable approaches to implementing
elements of several Movement Strategy recommendations: Invest in Skills &
Leadership Development, Identify Topics for Impact, and
Evaluate/Iterate/Adapt.

the movement: Climate Change and Sustainability.
What can I expect from the Lab?
The Organizer Lab will be a 9-week online learning experience from the end
of October until mid-December that prepares participants to design
strategic calls to action around prioritized knowledge gaps and more
generalized Wikimedia organizing and campaign/event design skills.
Participating organizers will leave the course with:

A firm understanding of how to develop a locally-relevant topic list for
a knowledge gap-focused campaign
-
A process for identifying local audiences and organizations who would be
good candidates for activation and recruitment
-
Understanding of the menu of tactics, tools, and newcomer engagement
strategies available for effective event design
-
A scalable and fundable project proposal for events or projects
connected to a global campaign around Earth Day (April 2023) (building on

or other regional and international campaigns.
By the end of this program, successful participants will not only be able
to lead campaigns targeted at climate and sustainability but should also be
able to transfer these skills to other topics for impact areas.

pool of grant funding that can support their first implementation of a
campaign or topics for an impact project. Applications are open from September
