Congratulations Wikimedia Serbia and welcome, Ivan!

It has come to my attention that certain companies in the Foundation's
employment peer group have been offering ova cryonics as a family planning
benefit:
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/10/14/apple-and-facebooks-newest-perk-free…
I recommend that the Foundation explore gender-inclusive cryonics
solutions. I understand that supercooling vitrification freezers such as
those manufactured by ABI, Ltd. of Chiba, Japan called CASfresh or Cells
Alive System may be of some interest.
Best regards,
James Salsman

Apologies for the thread-split, but this is OT from the original thread.
This blog post actually referred to the Mobile Web, where the feature
continues to be available (without a map view):
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Nearby
The new Android app isn't simply an upgrade of the last version, it's
a complete re-write in native code -- one which by all accounts has
been extremely well received. In determining the feature set, the team
looked at core functionality they really wanted to deliver in the
first release, and iterated on that based on user feedback during the
beta.
We are in the lucky position to now have a team of three full-time
developers working on the app to make it continually better. You can
see the most recent code changes here:
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/q/apps/android,n,z
And a more understandable view of the current sprint in Trello:
https://trello.com/b/5DhKhjmW/mobile-app-sprint-35-article-usability-enhanc…
So you can expect a pretty fast pace of change.
The team prioritized features that were highly requested and popular
among users. The "nearby" feature in the old app also relied on third
party infrastructure, which makes us a bit uncomfortable from a user
privacy and principles perspective. Our plan is to build out our own
OpenStreetMap infrastructure later this year which will help in
further developing such geo-functionality.
CCing Dan (PM for Apps) in case he wants to weigh in on the roadmap.

Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated on October 14 this year.
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (born in the year 1815) was a
mathematician and computer programmer who worked on Charles Babbage's
Analytical Engine. She foresaw how computers could evolve into devices that
perform tasks more sophisticated than simple calculations. She is
controversially credited with authoring the world's first computer
program, and certainly worked extensively with Babbage. [1]
Ada Lovelace Day celebrates women's contributions to science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics.
Wikimedia Commons, English Wikipedia, and Persian Wikipedia have designated
a watercolor portrait of Lovelace as a featured picture. [2]
Happy Ada Lovelace Day,
Pine

Dear members of the Wikimedia Community!
On October 22, 2014, at 6:00 p.m., at the *Frankfurter Platz* in Słubice
the Wikipedia Monument will be unveiled. We would like to give the
Wikipedia community to express their thanks to the originators of the
Monument, i.e. the employees of Collegoun Polonicum in Słubice and the
Mayor of the town, by preparing a commemorative book. The entries to the
book will be collected on an dedicated polish Wikipedia page, and
afterwards they will be printed and presented to the hosts of the unveiling
ceremony by the representative of the WIkimedia Polska association.
If you wish to thank the originators of the idea of erecting the world's
first monument to Wikipedia, add a few words of your own on this page:
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Pomnik_Wikipedii_-_Ksi%C4%99ga_pami…
.
We will collect the entries by October 18 (Saturday), 23:59 CET.
Feel free to write in your native language if you want to - you don't have
to use English (or Polish :) ).

Dear members of the Wikimedia community,
Organizations that plan to apply for funding in Round 2 of the Annual Plan
Grants / FDC process should submit their Letters of Intent by 1 November.
This is the essential first step in creating a proposal. Proposal forms for
Round 2 will be due by 1 April and Round 2 grants will begin 1 July.
Organizations may submit their Letters of Intent by using the button here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG>.
Only organizations that submit a Letter of Intent by 1 November can be part
of the process to become eligible for 2014-2015 Round 2 (proposal forms due
1 April, grants begin 1 July), so if your organization might want to apply
for funding in that round you should submit a Letter of Intent. This is an
important first step in the Annual Plan Grants process that allows
applicants to work closely with the FDC and with FDC staff before proposals
are submitted. In each Letter of Intent, the organization should state that
it would like to apply for funding in the upcoming round, and offer an
estimate of the amount of funding to be requested. This statement of intent
and the amount are both non-binding, so the organization can choose not to
participate in the Annual Plan Grants process or to change the amount
requested at any time before proposal forms are submitted.
For more information about Round 2 dates, please visit the calendar:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Information.
Here are a few important Round 2 dates to keep in mind:
-
Letters of Intent due: 1 November
-
Eligibility confirmed: 15 March
-
Proposal forms due: 1 April
-
Community review: 1 April - 30 April
-
FDC recommendation: by 1 June
-
Board decision: by 1 July
-
Grants begin: 1 July
Remember also that Community Review of Round 1 proposals is taking place
right now, until 31 October, and that your feedback and questions are an
important input into the FDC’s decisionmaking. Please visit this page for
more information:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Proposals/Community/Review.
Please contact FDC staff at any time with questions (
FDCSupport(a)wikimedia.org) about the process or about how to submit a Letter
of Intent.
Best regards from FDC staff!
