A couple of months ago, we was approached by an artist group which
idea is to raise cultural awareness by putting at billboards stylized
photos of (not so) famous [1] cultural and scientific persons from the
history of Serbia. They wanted to incorporate their art project into
Wikimedia Serbia projects and we've found that it is a great idea. The
project's site is likilink.org [2][3][4].
The project has been done without money. The main company which deals
with billboards in Serbia, Alma Quatro [5] is giving to us not used
billboards for free. "Not used" means, for example, if some billboard
campaign is lasting up to 15th of some month -- as they are renting
space on monthly basis -- the rest of the month is our. So, it is not
about bad locations; contrary, locations are top.
But, it was their initial idea, they will work on that, but, it is up
to Wikimedians to choose who will be the next persons on billboards
all over Serbia.
So, after the first couple of writers, the rest is up to them.
The first person on billboards is Radoje Domanovic [5], Serbian
satirist with Orwellian motives. Those billboards are presently at ~20
places in Belgrade, including large billboards at the highway entrance
to Belgrade.
The second group will be 5 persons with 30 billboards each:
* Two will be Serbian writers.
* One will be a female inventor from our previous, but not yet
finished project ("Female inventors") in cooperation with another
organization.
* One will be Richard Stallman.
* One will be Jimmy Wales.
Yes, Jimmy will get 30 billboards in Belgrade for one month :)
[1] - Famous, but not so as Nikola Tesla or Vuk Karadzic are.
[2] - "Lik i link" means "face/figure and link".
[3] - The billboards are designed as the image from the site, but with
link to the project's site and
[4] - Please, don't ask my why I've put just a JPEG with <map> >:| It
will be fixed today or tomorrow.

Did anyone ever consider completely migrating WMF projects to
three-letter language codes? Currently two-letter ISO 639-1 code are
used whenever possible and three-letter ISO 639-2 or ISO 639-3 codes
are used when a two-letter code is not available.
Among the three-letter codes currently having Wikipedias are Sicilian
(scn), Kashubian (csb), Nahuatl (nah), Udmurt (udm) and Mari (mhr).
Using three-letter codes for all languages seems to me like a more
egalitarian approach.
Two-letter URL's must, of course, be kept as redirects.
Can anyone think about any problems with this?

Our final (*) strategic planning office hours will be on Tuesday, June
29, at 21:00-22:00 UTC. Local timezones are available at:

As always, you can access the chat by going to

We'll be talking about an upcoming Call for Action, movement
priorities, and Wikimania.
Since it will be our last (*), we hope many of you will join us. If
you can't make it, don't worry; we're also planning a virtual
celebration.

* Several people have discussed continuing the weekly office hours
beyond the scope of this project, which I think is a wonderful idea.
I'm sure this will also be discussed tomorrow.

Hello, Wikimedians. My name is Robert Harris and I'm the consultant the Board has asked to look at the various issues around potentially objectionable content as outlined by the Board resolution and FAQs posted to Foundation-l June 24, 2010. I've created a page on Meta-Wiki (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2010_Wikimedia_Study_of_Controversial_Content) to serve as a place where I can post the research I'm collecting for the study and also hope that that page can act as a forum for discussions around the various issues I've been asked to consider. The page includes my own series of FAQs to help introduce myself. Hope to hear from you as I look at these complex and significant issues.

Why not apply the same logic to all infractions.
If you run a red light three times in your life, then you may not ever
drive again.
If you leave your underwear on the floor three times, then you cannot wear
clothes.
How exactly would you impose a "you cannot use the internet" restriction
anyway?
I don't see it as a very likely outcome.

Just to be clear about this, I read Sam here as saying something like "there
is a potential risk that we will be unable to acculturate new staff as we
grow." This of course is true -- and it's even true when growth is slow!
But in practice the Foundation takes this risk very seriously, and takes
pains to promote the acculturation of new staff, not just to Foundation
culture but to the larger community. One way we do this is by sending new
staff to Wikimania, if it makes sense to do so, and/or promoting new
staff's interaction with the community in other ways. Attendees at Wikimania
this year will see a number of staff who haven't been there before --
everyone is urged to engage staff members in conversations about our work
together, or other topics of common interest. (I'll be there too -- first
Wikimania since Taiwan!)

Hey All--
It is with deep appreciation, many congratulations, and a touch of
sadness that I tell you that Anya Shyrokova will be leaving Wikimedia at
the end of July to go to graduate school. Anya has been accepted to the
University of Michigan's School of Information. Her last day at WMF
will be July 30, 2010.
Anya began work as our first Development Associate on August 26, 2008.
In September 2009, Anya earned a promotion to Stewardship Associate,
working with our middle donors ($500 to $10,000). Anya was a large part
of the success of our 2008 and 2009 Annual Fundraisers, managing an
infinite amount of donor inquiries and setting up many of our policies
and procedures.
The fundraising team, along with the entire organization, will miss
Anya's eternal earnest hard work and her deep commitment to Wikimedia's
mission. Please join me in wishing Anya the best as she pursues her
academic endeavors. She has mentioned more than once that she plans on
staying involved in the projects and our mission.

{fact}
When I go to YouTube, the number of videos which are some bad amateur
singer trying to sing some good song far outweigh the number of original videos
of that song/group. The amount of free content in music, in general is
rapidly approaching or perhaps past par with all professional music ever created
to this day.
It's the proliferation of the ability for any person in the world to make a
spontaneous video that has now completely swamped all previous video
content.
When people start rapibly screaming that free licenses are just trying to
promote stealing, they just aren't getting it.
The *point* of free licensing is to promote sharing, which is mostly
personal content, regardless of what some music lobbying group is trying to
make-up.
Video sex chat rooms create more video every single day, than RCA ever
created in a week.
And that's going to accelerate. Same thing with music, same thing with
text. The amount of free is many times the amount of unfree.

Dear All,
I have just made the “final schedule”* for Wikimania 2010 available
online here: http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/wiki/Schedule.
Dear authors, I was doing my best to plan the sessions according to
your requests regarding time needed for presentations/workshops/etc.
and your availability. However, I still need you to review it and tell
me if you can be present on given time.
Best regards,
