Well that was what I was going to do but I cant find the common/images
directory.

I'll give you the quick fix:
Put your image in the /common/images directory. You can even rename it
wiki.png so you don't even have to touch your LocalSettings.php file. If
you
keep the old image name just change the line to the
following:
"$wgStylePath/common/images/yourimage.png"
However, I would advise that if you are planning on running a wiki you
become familiar with its basic configuration. You really should know every
line in your LocalSettings file and what exactly it does. The file is very
well documented on Meta and I think you should spend some time there. You
probably shouldn't be running about changing things without understanding
what or why or how, not if you really want to learn how to manage a
mediawiki implementation.
