We could learn from IBM's experience with the open source community.
They famously made it company policy for staff developers to communicate
through the Linux community forums rather than through internal company
methods. This was key to their acceptance and success in the open source
world, in particular early in their involvement.
While there is a small cost in forcing communication to be public rather
than private, the dividends are usually worth it.
