It'd probably be sufficient to do an XSL style sheet. You could even send
XML+XSL to the client for clients that support it, and do server-side XSL
for clients that don't.
That unfortunately introduces another dependency. PHP has an optional,
non-default XSLT module which requires an external library, or you can
run through an external program as a filter (requires that one be
obtained and be runnable, etc).
