Your answer saved me a lot of time since I intended (after hours of reading the
code and thinking that in updateArticle/insertNewArticle only the case of real
page redirects is handled) to look even deeper at other parts to find the place
where the redirect is perhaps set (to disable it there) instead of just
deleting the redirect :)
I had to do something like this for the multiupload
extension, which
may be of some use to you:

written the code, and then noticed it didn't behave
the way I wanted it to in certain cases (and could also reproduce this behavior
with SpecialUpload). My task was to upload certain files that are in a ZIP
archive (instead of the ZIP archive itself).
