I just don't like the look of emdashes without any spacing at all.
. . . though it looks like the parser automagically replacing it does
present some technical issues all its own, and perhaps I should also say
that I vote "no" for surrounding spaces being eaten by other
text-replacement techniques that might be used to turn -- into an emdash
(such as the suggested Javascript method, which wouldn't work for
everyone, but would at least circumvent the technical issues with having
the parser do it).
