Anyway, HTTP doesn't support feedback during
upload (or any feedback, really),
and HTML does not offer a way for multi-file uploads (which would also be quite
handy). Any solutions I have so far seen for that are based either on a Java
Applet or on Falsh. Both are rather cluncky and and ugly solutions. HTTP and
HTML being what they are, I'm afraid we won't see a decent free, reliably and
widely compatible solution for this any time soon.
Isn't it OK if we have a Java/Flash option for those who can use it,
and current Special:Upload for those who can't?
I think it's difficult to say that Java/Flash options are "clunky and
ugly", considering all photo and video sharing sites offer this
option. As someone on a slo.o.o.o.ow uploading speed feedback is a
godsend.
And they frequently break. Imageshak's for example kills my firefox every time.
I don't know why, but i'm sure i'm not the only one. If we provide something
like this, it should be opt-in (a gadget?) unless ist's *very* smooth and
reliable. Maybe that is possible, but I have not seen it yet even once.
