See Scotland by Train provides the first chance to see National Museums Scotland's
beautiful collection of Scottish railway posters. These striking works of art reflect the
changing tastes and needs of the rail passenger over the last 100 years, giving a flavour
of what it meant to travel by rail. They depict some of the most dramatic and scenic
locations around Scotland.
A Sense of Place: New Jewellery from the Northern Lands

This exhibition explores the relationship contemporary jewellers have with their
environment. Six nations are involved in the project, each at the northern edge of
European jewellery practice, and each with their own individual cultural histories and
heritage.

Our six-week programme features regular drop-in object handling, craft and science
sessions as well as gallery safaris and trails. Join Macastory for an Olympic Games-themed

Japanese Star Festival, Big Top Glasgow traditional games, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Pathology activities, A Slice of Life gallery character encounters and Royal Observatory

Railway posters offer their own distinctive view of the changing world of travel over the
last 150 years. Ed Bartholomew, Senior Curator of Image and Sound Collections at the
National Railway Museum, explores the history of the railway poster, and David Bownes,
Head of Collections, and Mike Walton, Retail Director at London Transport Museum, share
stories about London Transport posters past and present, including contemporary
commissioning and the Underground 150 Project. Refreshments included.

Dava Sobel, author of international bestseller Longitude, is in conversation this evening
with Professor John C Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland, and Dr John C Taylor, creator
of the Midsummer Chronophage, a clockwork artwork inspired by 18th century clockmaker John
Harrison. Harrison featured as a main character in Longitude, which was adapted in 2000
into a BAFTA-winning TV drama with Michael Gambon. Ms Sobel and Dr Taylor recount how they
each drew inspiration for their own work from Harrison and his navigational achievements.
