Something for Wikimedia UK to consider as it plans to give £10,000 to WMDE for the Toolserver's operations as per 2013 Annual Plan: http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/2013_Activity_Plan#Toolserver

Dear Wikimedian,
On November 5th, it will be Wikimedia UK's 4th birthday. We would like to
hold a small celebration, to thank our volunteers and members for helping
us get this far and ahcieve so much in the space of four years.
We have a small favour to ask regarding the celebrations: as the birthday
falls a week before the November London Meetup, we were wondering if the UK
Wikimedian community will mind if we were to hold a celebration event
during or after the London meet up. We're keen to ensure that it remains a
community meetup, rather than a chapter one, which is why we're asking your
permission.
**
We would also like to know if the community would rather it be held in the
Penderel's Oak (or a similar pub-like setting), or with a small party
somewhere else e.g the Google Campus (http://www.campuslondon.com/workspace/
).
We'd really welcome your opinions, as we want to make this birthday
celebration about thanking you - member, supporter, or Wikipedian - for all
your support.
Hasina.

TL;DR: Wikimedia UK has had many successes throughout the last four
years, but it has moved too fast and this has caused problems. We need
to stop and think. To give ourselves time to do that, we need to
rewrite the 2013 Activity Plan so we’re not doing too much.
This is based quite closely on an interview with me before the EduWiki
conference. I think I said "Wikipedia articles" rather than "Wikipedia
sites", "students adopt Wikipedia articles" rather then "students
adapt Wikipedia articles" and a few similar changes. It seems he took
brief notes of the interview rather than a recording.

Dear all,
We have posted two items on the Wikimedia UK blog today, one announcing the
appointment of Saad Choudri as a co-opted Trustee, the other announcing the
resignation of Roger Bamkin.
The text of the statements is as follows, and they can also be seen online
at: http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/
Best regards,
Chris
==
Wikimedia UK is pleased to announce the appointment of Saad Choudri to its
Board of Trustees. This appointment is effective from 19 September 2012.
Saad brings a wealth of skills and experience to the Board. He is a
practising solicitor in the video games industry and has offered legal
advice *pro bono* in the past. He is a member of the Law Society, and stood
as a candidate in this year’s Trustee election, where over half of the
membership voted for
him<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Annual_Conference_2012_AGM_Minutes#Election_of…>.
You can see his candidate
statement<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_UK_2012/Elections/Statements#Sa…>
and his answers to candidate
questions<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_UK_2012/Elections/Questions#Saa…>
from
that election.
We welcome Saad to the Board and very much look forward to working with him.

Wikimedia UK would like to announce that Roger Bamkin has stepped down as a
Trustee.
“Roger’s energy and enthusiasm has been central to the establishment of
Wikimedia UK as a registered charity, our outreach programme, and to many
other aspects of our work. QRpedia, one of his creations, is now in use in
dozens of museums and galleries worldwide,” said Chris Keating, Chair of
Wikimedia UK.
“Roger has always conducted himself with openness and honesty with regards
to his business interests, which the Board greatly appreciates. However we
have reached the decision together that it is best if Roger steps back from
the Board, and thus the Board has accepted his resignation. I look forward
to working with Roger in future.”
The constitution of Wikimedia UK allows the Board to co-opt a Trustee to
fill Roger’s place until the next AGM when elections will be held, and we
will update the community about our intentions about filling this vacancy
in due course.

I gave Slate an interview in the hopes of being the first non-crazy person
to talk about what Roger is *actually doing* - which, yes, I still have
problems with - but which isn't being Scrooge McDuck using WMUK to grab all
the money in the land whilst writing all the articles about Gibraltar
himself under the watchful gaze of the Tsar of Tourism. That is the only
reason I gave those people the time of day. They have now quoted me as
saying that Roger was writing and promoting the articles himself. They
completely contradict themselves at the end of the paragraph, which is a
hell of a lot closer to what I actually said, but...whatever, they can't
write.
For the record, no. No I did not say that. Yes, I have issues. You know
what? I asked the community about them and they shrugged their shoulders
and said: "Eh, you're wrong." That's that then. If there are further
discussions about what I feel are relevant issues, then I'll join them in a
manner that AGF, because that is the Wikipedian way. People can be wrong,
right or somewhere in between but thorough, open and civil discussion from *
both* sides is required to help address the situation. (No Wikipediocracy,
I don't just mean you, people are talking about this on-wiki too from
multiple sides) Hopefully with a view to looking forward and adapting to
these situations, whether it's to welcome or deny them.
I don't think this has anything to do with Wikimedia UK whatsoever, and I'm
sorry you're even having the discussion here. It should've stayed on
Wikipedia, where it belongs, and where there are appropriate channels for
people to discuss issues of paid editing, COI, impact on the project etc.
I'm also sorry to Roger, because differences of opinion regarding on-wiki
behaviour should not result in such incivility, or knee-jerk reactions. He
added much to WMUK, gave so much of his time and love to help the chapter
go forward, and to lose him is a great shame. For my part in that, I can
only apologise to Roger and the community.
Fiona

Does no one else think that this comment by Tom M should be acknowledged?
Wikimedia UK is meant to promote the community but good faith criticism
results in an individual receiving hate mail and cold shouldering. And
when someone says that has happened they are ignored and no one connected
with the organisation, a trustee or the Chief Executive or one of the
office staff, says anything about it.
And Tom is not alone. I have discussed with others how we feel unable to
go to events because we have made well-founded criticisms seen worthy of
coverage in the serious press but know that we will be accused of
harassment if certain people also attend the meetings.
WMUK is fracturing the editing community in this country and no one is
using their salaried WMUK time to fix this.
I'm a little lost as to what criminal activity I was alleging :-s
Corruption is not inherently criminally illegal :-)
But, sure... I retract "corrupt" and insert "rotten" instead.

To list as well. Bugger this, I'm changing it back now.

This being the aim of the entire beatup.
Andreas and friends have recently started on similar spurious bollocks
about Steve Virgin, pity he's already left the board.
