** Wiki Science Winners 2023
------------------------------------------------------------
The long-awaited moment has arrived – WCI is delighted to announce the outstanding winners of the Wiki Science Ireland 2024 Photo competition! After weeks of rigorous review and spirited deliberation, we are thrilled to recognize the remarkable contributions of these talented photographers
Without further ado, let's celebrate our winners!
** Microscopy Images
------------------------------------------------------------
🥇 First Place: Degenerating-drosophila-retina by Guillaume Thuery.
This explosion of color is an image of the retina of a fruit fly expressing a toxic form of the RdgB protein, leading to degeneration. The yellow structures arephotoreceptors (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) . The colocalization that can be seen between the magenta and yellow colors suggests that astress response (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) has been activated in the photoreceptor cells.
🥈 Second Place: Iron Sulphate Nucleation Pointby by KarlGaff
This kaleidoscope of magenta and vivid green depicts thenucleation point (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39….) in a thin crystalline film of an iron-based compound photographed through compensated polarisation microscopy. Nucleation is a change that happens in a substance or mixture, for example, water turning to ice.
🥉 Third Place: Bryophyte Leaf Cells by KarlGaff
This vision of green is a close-up of the cell wall in a moss leaf. It shows plant cells packed with chloroplasts andbirefringence (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39….) .
🎖️ Honorable Mention: Pyramids of Anhydrite by Aileen555
This micrograph shows a vein of anhydrite (large triangular shapes) cutting a host rock of siltstone, filled with quartz and clay minerals. Anhydrite has perfect cleavage, resulting in the triangular forms seen here. The image is cross-polarised light, with anhydrite often displaying these characteristic pinks, blues, and grey colours. This sample is from the Lubambe Cu-Co mine, Zambia an important supplier of metals needed for the global green transition.
** Wildlife and Nature Images
------------------------------------------------------------
🥇 First Place: A Picture of a Star by Paddynaramore
The photographer who took this hauntingly beautiful sunrise photo says he used “No filters, no shades on the lens, nothing at all except the perfect atmospheric complexion for me to get a naked eye picture of the Sun! Granted it was setting but it was a stunning thing to behold, particularly in between a gap in the hedgerow like this! Just wish I'd captured it in full!”
🥈 Second Place: Bailieborough Northern Lights by Olliebailie
Last November the Northern Lights could be seen all over Ireland and the Wiki Science photographers really took advantage capturing amazing shots in their localities. Olliebailie’s photo depicts an amazing site at Castle Lake in County Cavan when the Northern lights lit up this area of outstanding natural beauty.
🥉 Third Place: Aurora Beach by Anthony's Astro
This winning photo was captured only after a chase for clear skies across four counties, to try to catch the aurora! The pilgrimage was all worth it when winner Anthony's astro finally got a brief and colourful display at Portmarnock Beach Ireland.
🎖️ Honorable Mention: Aurora bench by Anthony's Astro
He continued to make the most out of one of nature’s most mystical displays getting this shot of the Aurora lighting up the sky at Balbriggan beach. Using a timer and his camera, he was able to sit back on the bench and watch the wondrous display.
** Astronomy Images
------------------------------------------------------------
🥇 First Place: Newgrange Trails by Anthony’s Astro
The star trails over this image are evocative of the ones found carved into the stones inside this Neolithic Tomb in Meath. The swirling patterns in the sky were achieved by taking 30-second exposures for a couple of hours and stacking them all in starstax.
🥈 Second Place: Moon Crane by Anthony’s Astro
Perhaps one of the most magical images of our winners this gorgeous shot shows the full moon being held up in the sky by a crane.
🥉 Third Place: Sky Train by Anthony’s Astro
Another image by Anthony’s Astro depicts his dedication to his art infused with a sense of wonder and creativity. To achieve this gorgeous starry silhouette he used an astro modified 13 year old camera. While waiting for the Milky Way to rise at 3 am, he shot a panoramic of an old bog train that sits on the hill in Lough Boora Park in Offaly Ireland. Later in the night, he shot a panoramic of the Milky Way with the same camera. He used a star tracker to allow him to get longer exposures of the stars and what a result this long night was!
** Thanks to Everyone who Entered!
------------------------------------------------------------
We would also like to give sincere thanks to our wonderful panel of judges for dedicating their time and enthusiasm to the selection process and celebration of Science in Ireland!
All of the winning photos will now go on to represent Ireland at the International phase of the competition. If you missed this photo competition, don't worry we are currently running another! ** What is Feminism and Folklore?
------------------------------------------------------------
Feminism and Folklore (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) is an exciting initiative led by Wiki Loves Folklore that is dedicated to highlighting the contributions of women in folklore. We invite you to be a part of this collaborative effort aimed at bridging the gender gap (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) in online knowledge dissemination.

** Translating Wiki at DCU
------------------------------------------------------------
February saw the beginning of the Simulated Translation Bureau at Dublin City University. WCI is collaborating with a group of 20 Masters students and lecturer Aishowarza Manik at DCU. This year the students will be translating Wikipedia into Japanese, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese, French, English, and Irish.
The students learned about the Open knowledge movement and how Wikipedia works with a case study on Vicipéid. They will now take a hands-on approach to translating pages with the ‘Client’s’ (WCI) continued support and feedback.
** History in Your Hands at DCU Library
------------------------------------------------------------
This week our Irish Language Officer, Amy took part in the History in Your Hands Project at DCU Library.
The project is structured around teaching fourth and fifth-year secondary school students how to plan, research, and write their research study as part of Leaving Certificate History. During this project, a group of students from each school will learn research, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.
The students will learn about the different types of information sources available and how to find high-quality sources for historical research. At the end of the project, the students will understand how to locate, evaluate, cite, and reference sources.
Amy presented information about using Wikipedia for research and also introduced the students to our Wiki Women Erasmus+ Project aimed at closing the Gender Gap on Wikipedia and enhancing minority language Wikipedias.
** Mid-Term Conversation Review
------------------------------------------------------------
Last week Shannon and Sophie attended the Mid-Term Conversation Hour which was an opportunity to present what WCI has been up to and answer questions.
It was a wonderful opportunity to hear from other Wikimedia Communities of a similar size including Wikimedia Norway (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) and Wikimedia Portugal (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) . We were able to exchange knowledge and discuss the challenges we have faced successes we have celebrated over the last year and ways we would like to progress moving forward.
Agnes Bruszik from the Wikimedia Foundation along with Camelia Boban and Josie Fraser, NWE Regional Funds Committee Members, joined the conversation hour to listen to the presentations and give feedback and advice. It was overall a successful way to foster knowledge exchange between communities.

** Nollaig Shona Daoibh! Happy Christmas to You All!
------------------------------------------------------------
As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey we've shared in 2023. It's with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the remarkable progress and connections we've forged within our community.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. Your commitment, creativity, and collaborative spirit have elevated our shared mission, enriching the Wikimedia landscape and fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and inclusivity.
** 2023 Wikimedia Community Ireland Highlights
------------------------------------------------------------
As we approach the year's end, we're excited to reminisce and celebrate some of the incredible highlights that have defined our journey together. From changes and transitions to inspiring collaborations, these moments remind us of the collective strength and potential within our community.
2023 has been a year of change for our group. We hired our first Irish Language Officer, Amy O'Riordan, to improve our outreach in Irish, our long time Project Coordinator, Rebecca O'Neill, stepped down, and we hired a new Programme Manager, Sophie Fitzpatrick. What I am most proud of this year is how, even with all of this change, we still had another year of successful programs. Amy has contributed immensely to the Wiki Women Erasmus+ project, which will, by the end of 2024, provide school and student toolkits for editing Wikipedia in Irish for the first time. Sophie has hit the ground running, expanding our outreach on social media platforms and running several successful online editing campaigns. I look forward to another year of innovative programs to bring the sum of all knowledge to everyone in Ireland in both English and Irish!
-Shannon Co-Chairperson
For me, the best news this year was the appointment of Amy O'Riordan as Oifigeach Gaeilge le Pobal Wikimedia na hÉireann. Bhuail mé le hAmy don chéad uair i mbliana ag an Oireachtas i gCill Airne, agus tá súil agam go mbeidh deis agam bualadh léi le haghaidh caife agus comhrá san athbhliain. Guím gach rath uirthi, agus ar ndóigh más féidir liom aon chúnamh a thabhairt di níl le déanamh aici ach ceist a chur orm!
B’fhéidir go mbeadh fonn ar ‘Wikimedia UK’ í a fhostú chun Tuaisceart Éireann a chlúdach chomh maith! Nollaig shona!
-Éamonn (Ériugena) Irish Language Editor
The WikiWomen Erasmus+ Project (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) initiative to address the under-representation of women on Wikipedia and to elevate minority languages in the digital space with the development of the educational toolkits (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) certainly was a major focus of 2023. But, the keystone event for me was the welcoming of Amy, our first Irish Language Officer at Wikimedia Community Ireland. With this expansion of our team we continue to push into new areas and expand our community presence. I remain encouraged with the community feedback that our focus be on supporting the good work done on Vicipéid. I think it is important to focus on Irish content in the Irish Language. The encyclopedia projects are the first destination for the vast majority of students performing academic research. It is important that local knowledge is available without the filters of translation. I'm excited to continue to accelerate our impact into the new year.
-Eugene Co-Chairperson
Dia dhaoibh a dhaoine uaisle! Toisc go bhfuil deireadh na bliana ag teacht anois, seo iad mo chuid machnaimh ar 2023. Ó mhí Iúil, nuair a thosaigh mé sa phost seo. d'aimsigh mé cuar céar foghlama ach ag an am céanna grúpa pobail a raibh (agus a bhfuil) cairdiúil agus cuidiúil. Táim fíorbhuíoch as bhur gcuid cabhair! Ba é an t-Oireachtas buaicphointe an bhliain domsa, mar tá alán suim ag daoine faoi Vicipéid agus ar Wiki na mBan chomh mhaith, agus nascanna déanta le haghaidh imeachtaí agus píosaí oibre a dhéanamh. Táim aag suil go mór leis an Athbhliain agus na himeachtaí atá ag teacht! Ba é tionscadal Wiki na mBan buaic eile ó 2023, tá an-cuid déanta againn agus níos mó le déanamh. Beidh seoladh an tionscadal ag an gcomhdháil Celtic Knot an bhliain seo chugainn. Bheinmis buíoch dá bhféadfadh daoine a chur in iúl dúinn cad atá uaibh don imeacht sin agus an suribhé a líonadh amach. Beannachtaí na féile chuid gach duine agus feicfidh mé sibh i 2024!
-Amy Irish Language Officer
** Art+Feminism
------------------------------------------------------------
Keep an eye out in January, as WCI will be taking part in the global Art+Feminism (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) Campaign.
In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female; more recent research 2013 Benjamin Mako Hill survey points to 16% globally and 22% in the US. The data relative to trans and non-binary editors is basically non-existent. That's a big problem. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: gaps in participation create gaps in content. Let's change that!
Join us as we kick things off starting with an Online Editathon (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) , to keep you occupied on dark January evenings!
** Wiki Loves Earth International Winning Photo Taken at Phoenix Park
------------------------------------------------------------
Last week the winners of the Wiki Loves Earth International Photography Competition (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) were announced. Among them, was a powerful photograph (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) taken at Phoenix Park in Dublin Ireland by MetAddyOliver.
The photo won a special prize in the “Human Rights and Environment” category that accepted images capturing the impact of human activity on the environment.
This year the Wiki Loves Earth (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) International photo contest supported the initiative #Wiki4HumanRights (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) , in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Its goal was to raise awareness of nature protection and human impacts on nature.
The photo portrays how environmental pollution threatens biodiversity worldwide. You can find out more about this image and take a look at the other imageshttps://wikimedia.ie/?post_type=programme&p=1058&preview=truehere (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) .
** HER-ald: HER archives, literature, documents
------------------------------------------------------------
On December 14th our Irish Language Officer, Amy attended the Her-ald: HER archives (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) , literature, documents event at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. Supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media and Mná 100, the seminar aimed to enhance the visibility of Irish women scientists, scholars, authors and others by bringing together archival practitioners, librarians, historians, and other stakeholders to discover, discuss and disseminate women's archival collections.
The seminar included discussions about ‘The Playwright on the Stairs: Recovering Archival Loss of Irish Women Theatre-Makers’ with Dr Barry Houlihan, Archivist (University of Galway Library Archives), 'Using the archives to write histories of queer female sexualities in Ireland' with Dr Mary McAuliffe, Director of Gender Studies (University College Dublin) and 'Her voice, through the works of Cartoon Saloon'with Nora Twomey, Co-founder of Cartoon Saloon.
Notably, the event was held on the 105th anniversary of Irish women over the age of 30 exercising their right to vote (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) in a general election for the first time. The event was of particular interest to Wikimedia Community Ireland, ahead of Art+Feminism (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) which is coming up in January.
** Save the date! The Celtic Knot is back
------------------------------------------------------------
We are delighted to announce that after several years of online conferences, the Celtic Knot Conference is back and will take place again in person! We are thrilled to host the conference in Waterford City this coming year. The dates, yet to be determined, will likely be in mid-September to mid-October 2024.
The Celtic Knot Wikimedia Languages Conference aims to bring people together to share their experiences of working on sharing information in minority and minoritised languages. Our aim is to help people learn how to direct the flow of information across language barriers and support their communities.
If you are involved in underrepresented languages on the Wikimedia Projects, please help us design the program by filling out the community survey (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) by January 21st.
You can read more and keep up to date about Celtic Knot 2024 on meta (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) .

Dia Duit!
We are very happy to announce that the Celtic Knot Conference will be back
for its 7th edition in the new year! We are delighted that it will be
hosted in *Waterford City, Ireland, in September 2024*. The exact date will
be announced as soon as possible.
The Celtic Knot is a conference dedicated to minoritized languages on the
Wikimedia projects, including Irish. Getting back to its roots, in the
Celtic languages and nations, the event gathers people from
communities and *languages
that are underrepresented on the Wikimedia projects*. It is a place where
people working on growing and maintaining their communities can meet, learn
from each other, and support each other on topics like community growth,
technical tools, or collaboration with partners.
Celtic Knot 2024
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Knot_Conference_2024>, will be an
in-person event, held in Waterford, Ireland's oldest city which has an
abundance of cultural heritage and history. We are currently exploring
options to make conference resources (talks, panels, etc.) available to
those who are unable to attend in person.
We are currently gathering input from the community to build a conference
tailored to your needs: whether you attended a previous edition of the
Celtic Knot or not, if you are involved in underrepresented languages on
the Wikimedia Projects, please *take a few minutes to fill in the community
survey <https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_erCHFhEJyzrO46i>*, and
make sure to share the information with your local group. The survey is
open until January 21st. Many thanks in advance!
As we are starting to build the concept and the program, we will regularly
improve the existing event pages on Meta and post updates on the talk page
of the event
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Celtic_Knot_Conference_2024>.
The core organizing team is composed of Amy O’Riordan (WCI), Sophie
Fitzpatrick (WCI), Daria Cybulska (WMUK), Richard Nevell (WMUK), supported
by Léa Lacroix (community engagement consultant). If you have ideas or
suggestions, if you would like to get involved in the conference, feel free
to contact any of us.
We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Celtic Knot!
Le dea-ghuí,
Sophie Fitzpatrick
