Dear Wiki-Yorkers,
In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Kundiman
<http://www.kundiman.org/> and Wikimedia NYC are teaming up for another
weeklong Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon focusing on Asian American literature. Since
2018, Kundiman and Wikimedia NYC and DC have partnered to address the
erasure of Asian American writers online. With the help of our communities,
we have collectively added over 80,000 words on Asian American literature
to Wikipedia. Though Wikipedia is a widely-used global resource, the second
most popular website in the U.S., it is predominantly edited by white men,
and that imbalance shows in its expertise. Creating and adding to articles
on Wikipedia is a way for the community to come together to demonstrate
literary activism and to increase the visibility of Asian American writers
online.
There is no experience required, and Wikipedia newbies are encouraged! We
will offer three free online trainings via Zoom throughout the week. Join
us at any time to pitch in during #KundimanWikiWeek!
Here’s how to join us this week:
- *Sign up here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfK9XoNOAu4kMNZgIfZZZbdX-ijiv-bvfy…>!*
You can register for a free Wikipedia training on Zoom, or let us know that
you don’t need to attend a training, but will be editing with us. After you
sign up, we’ll be sending you an e-mail with more detailed instructions for
the week. If you don’t have time to attend a training, you can take a look
at Kundiman's Wikipedia Editing Guide
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1voZ3oW61h3AljJoWp3vJ8C-Vl1iWrUosT_M9w1g…>.
However, we encourage you to attend a training, as they are fun, simple,
and much easier to learn from!
- *Join our Wikipedia team
<https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Wikimedia_NYC/Asian_American_…>.*
This helps us track everyone who has edited with us this week and see how
many pages we add to and create! (*When creating an account, we
recommend choosing a username that is personal to you, but doesn't
personally identify you, as edits are tied to your username*.)
- *Join the Kundiman + Wikimedia Slack channel
<https://wikinyc.slack.com/join/shared_invite/zt-pndno84k-bbFQrI6XsdkqNe7PSM…>*
so you can ask questions at any time during the week. Just click the above
link, enter in your email, and click on the #kundiman channel on the left
sidebar!
- Have an idea for a page that should be added or edited? *Add it to our
List of Pages to Edit
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nerhb8laucpgahuyukzJafB-aposiCMxHpSFLAL…>.*
- *Share your progress on social media* using the hashtag
#KundimanWikiWeek or let us know what you’ve edited by e-mailing
info(a)kundiman.org. We’d love to compile our collective edits for a recap.
Trainings will be held on zoom at:
- Sunday, May 23rd: 1 PM–2PM ET
- Tuesday, May 25th: 3 PM–4PM ET
- Wednesday, May 26th: 6:30 PM–7:30 PM ET
Make sure you register above to attend! We look forward to editing with you
soon.

Dear Wiki-Yorkers,
Please join Wikimedia NYC, the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS), the
Interference Archive and the Tompkins Square Branch of the New York Public
Library as we work virtually this Saturday to expand knowledge of the Lower
East Side.
In keeping with MoRUS's mission to preserve the history of grassroots
activism & promote community-based urban ecologies, we will expand
Wikipedia’s coverage of the community gardens, community centers,
grassroots movements, galleries, clubs, squats and homesteads that have
contributed to our neighborhood's oversized cultural impact. The
edit-a-thon runs from 2-4 pm, but you can stay for as long (or as short) as
you like. No experience of anything is required, and new editors are
encouraged!
Date: Saturday, April 3rd
Time: 2:00 - 4:00PM EST

During this time of social-distancing, Wikimedia NYC aims to create
opportunities for institutional partners and members of our community to
connect and learn from each other, as well as to develop best practices,
build community, foster new ideas, and plan projects for when the pandemic
is over. We therefore seek proposals from members of our community
interested in facilitating a program for learning, and supporting the
development of communities of practice across our metropolitan area’s
various cultural sectors. Each facilitator will convene a series of
roundtable discussions over four months around their proposed focus area,
report on the outcomes, and make community-building recommendations.
Proposals should be between 500 and 1,000 words and address:
* Your relationship with Wikimedia projects (e.g. Wikipedia) and/or
Wikimedia NYC.
* A focus area for the roundtable. This may include an area of practice
(e.g. libraries, archives and museums), a Wikimedia project (e.g.
Wikidata), thematic area (e.g. science and ecology), an underrepresented
group (e.g. lgbtq+ editors), or a role within the Wikimedia movement (e.g.
edit-a-thon facilitators).
* Relevance of the focus area to Wikimedia NYC and its community.
* Ways in which individual sessions will be structured, for example in the
form of an example session plan including community participation and
mutual support.
Suggested target audience/participants of roundtable discussions.
*Support and How to Apply*
Facilitators will receive a $1,000 honorarium in recognition of their work.
Wikimedia NYC will provide access to its web conferencing platforms and
outreach channels, and will be available to collaborate and provide
guidance as necessary.
Please send a resume and proposal to rajene(a)wikimedianyc.org by March 30th
with the subject line “Roundtable Proposal.” Proposals will be considered
in order of receipt, until filled. Full description available at

Dear Wiki-Yorkers,
You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for its monthly
WikiWednesday Salon at 7PM, Wednesday, March 17th.
As this WikiWednesday coincides with Saint Patrick's Day, we will have a

Wikipedia, the efforts of the community in Ireland, and personal work on
historical biographies with a special Irish-New York connection.
This month will also include a discussion of Black WikiHistory Month in
February and WikiWomen's History Month and Art+Feminism in March, and of
course the great work that is being done in these topical areas throughout
the year.
We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite

not typically be able to join us in person!
