Dear representatives of affiliates,
TL;DR List the representative of your affiliate on meta.[1] Reach out to
project wikis in your language about the top most prioritized
recommendation in the strategy process.
Implementing an Interim Global Council, drafting a Movement Charter, and
creating a Global Council came out as the first priority in the Global
Conversations (Cluster A) in December 2020.[1] The ideas are based on the
strategy recommendation "Ensure Equity in decision making".[2]
As a volunteer I started an initiative in a bottom-up process. I created a
very concise page on meta.[3] Part of the text is a one sentence summary of
[2]. If anyone can come up with a better summary of the intent of what the
Roles & Responsibilities Working Group has been working on for over a year
(or two), be-bold, it is a wiki.
The Global Conversations on January 23 and 24 made clear that inclusion of
underrepresented voices is on top of the mind of most people.
What I want you to do is to no longer exclude yourself, and start including
yourself. I know nearly all of you want to see a Global Council in the
future. Establishing an affiliate has been one of your prior steps in
self-organization beyond your wiki. The time has come to unite and create a
union of wikis and affiliates. There is no other way than to self-organize
in a bottom-up process, and involve the onwiki communities now.
Please do list the name of a representative of your affiliate on the page
on meta.[3]
Our movement consists of about 900 wikis in the first place. Their voice
should be represented on the future Global Council, and not only affiliate
voices. The time has come to involve the on wiki contributors, most of
which are unaware about anything happening in the Wikimedia movement
outside their own wiki. Tell them about the strategy process, and why you
find it important to start implementing an Interim Global Council, drafting
a Movement Charter, and creating a Global Council.
What I want you to do is to start a discussion on the wikis in your
language about:
1) Does your project wiki community support the creation of a Global
Council, and support drafting a constitution for the movement?
2) Who will be the representative of your project wiki or affiliate willing
to collaborate with representatives of project wikis and affiliates to work
on these matters?
This process will take as long as it takes. I visualize a list of 100+
names of affiliate representatives and a list of 100+ links to discussion
pages on project wikis by March 14, 2021 (pi-day). Ideas for how you can
help are listed on meta.[3]
I hereby assert my rights to what I write here and on meta, based on the
inalienable Human Rights enacted in the Universal declaration of human
rights.[4] Specifically:
Article 19. Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression;
this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to
seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and
regardless of frontiers.
Article 20. (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and
association.
Article 21. (3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority
of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine
elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held
by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.
Article 23. (4) Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for
the protection of his interests.
Regards,
Ad Huikeshoven
