International Museum Day 2024 on Wikimedia: Take part in the translation, media, and data challenges!

Hello, This May, we are celebrating the International Museum Day 2024 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024> with a series of activities in which anyone can participate following this year’s theme: *Museums for Education and Research*. Individual Wikimedians, affiliates, and user groups are invited to respond to three challenges to increase museum coverage on Wikimedia: translation <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024/Translation_c…> , media <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024/Image_campaign>, and data <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024/Data_campaign> . 1) *Translation*: Translate the *New Definition of Museum*, launched in 2022 by ICOM, into as many languages as possible. To participate in the challenge, follow the instructions on this page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024/Translation_c…> . 2) *Media*: Document museums around the world working with education and research. Upload to Wikimedia Commons photos of their events, tours, and workshops; specialist libraries and archives; accessibility resources; or conservation in progress. Follow the instructions on this page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024/Image_campaign>, which includes a map of museums around the world <https://w.wiki/9kvh>. 3) *Data*: *- Structured Data on Commons*: Add or enhance the data for images of museum buildings and spaces, as well as the collections they hold, such as paintings, sculptures, photographs, historical and natural objects, and manuscripts. The data challenge page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024/Data_campaign> suggests the types of data you can add, how to find images to work with, and different approaches to making edits. *- Wikidata*: Add or enhance the items about museums. The data challenge page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/International_Museum_Day_2024/Data_campaign> has queries to get started, such as museums on Wikidata without a country but with coordinates; paintings on Wikidata without an image; a list of curators by birthplace; as well as a table with a list of very important data missing from museums items on Wikidata by country. Announcing updates to the Case Review Committee

Greetings, The Case Review Committee has some updates to share. First, the Case Review Committee has successfully appointed new members to support the community. The Case Review Committee (CRC) reviews appeals of eligible Trust and Safety office actions [1]. The CRC is a critical layer of oversight to ensure that Wikimedia Foundation office actions are fair and unbiased. They also make sure the Wikimedia Foundation doesn’t overstep established practices or boundaries. If you are interested in joining the CRC, look forward to more information later in the year. Read more about the selection process on Meta [2]. Second, some of you may have noticed in the call for applications in late 2023, the Case Review Committee removed interim from their name [3]. The Case Review Committee has played an important role in supporting volunteer contributors and community health, and will continue to serve a role not covered by the Universal Code of Conduct. Read more about what the Case Review Committee does on Diff [4]. Lastly, the CRC's handbook has been updated with changes to language and a few process point clarifications. "OpenRefine for Wikimedia Commons: the basics" in Spanish and French

Hello everyone, A few weeks ago, we announced the course on the learning platform, WikiLearn, on how to upload and edit files on Wikimedia Commons using OpenRefine: *OpenRefine for Wikimedia Commons: the basics* <https://learn.wiki/courses/course-v1:Wikimedia-Foundation+WMF_GLAM001+2023/…> . Today, we are happy to announce two translations of the course: Spanish and French! - OpenRefine para Wikimedia Commons: conceptos básicos <https://app.learn.wiki/learning/course/course-v1:Wikimedia-Foundation+WMF_G…> (Spanish / Español) - OpenRefine pour Wikimedia Commons : les bases <https://app.learn.wiki/learning/course/course-v1:Wikimedia-Foundation+WMF_G…> (French, Français) This course can be easily translated into other languages (more about the translation process here <https://studio.learn.wiki/meta_translations/discover_courses/> and here <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tutorial_on_how_to_translate_course…>). More translations, such as Italian, Portuguese, and Basque, are being worked on. Just like the English course, the Spanish and French versions are available at any time, for free. You only need a Wikimedia account and the course can be followed at your own pace, with computer-graded exercises. A certificate is awarded at the end and an average of 6 to 8 hours is needed to complete the course. Please, feel free to share these translations with people who speak these languages and who you think might be interested in learning more about OpenRefine or Wikimedia Commons. Celebrating Brahim Faraji from the MENA region

Dear all, Wikimedia projects would not be possible without the work of countless volunteers, passionately working on bringing free knowledge to the world. Today we are wikicelebrating <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/WikiCelebrate>one of such volunteers - a longtime Wikimedia photographer and education projects organizer, Brahim Faraji <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Farajiibrahim>. In 2016, Brahim Faraji's search for a way to make a positive impact led him to the Wikimedia Movement. Browsing the internet, Wikipedia caught his eye. He soon realized it was more than just an encyclopedia: “I looked to know more about Wikipedia, how it works and its background, then I found the Wikimedia movement with its values which motivated me to work harder and with passion”, he says. He became a passionate Wikimedia photographer, contributing pictures on diverse topics: from TBOURIDA Festival <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BraveHearts_-_TBOURIDA_Festival_at_…> (henna on a Moroccan wedding <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henna_in_Moroccan_wedding.jpg>), to rebab instrument <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AL_RABAB_instrument_used_in_GHARNAT…>, from dramatic stormy sky <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brahim_FARAJI_-_Storm_and_Stars_-_J…> to cultural Morocco’s cultural heritage sites <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ksar_Tamnougalt_province_Zagora_%D9…>.
