Fellow Wikepedians,
"Photographs" along with captions or descriptive essays are of prime importance
for a descriptive guide or report on any subject or topic. I myself , a prolific
blogger, have personally always uploaded most of my photographs on "wikepedia
Commons", and some were used by "web News Media", professional writers for
their blog news , etc. "Wikepedian" contributors should be taught and
encouraged to "UPLOAD" photographs of their locality, interesting places
visited, tourist sites , etc for assessment by "Wikepedian editors" to be used
as future "Encyclopaediac references".
Thanks,
Rudolph.A.Furtado

Subject: Re: [Wikimedia-in-mum] Wikipedia-X anniversary pre-event meetup
I might not be able to attend tomorrow's meet due to my academic schedule, but
here's a suggestion.
While finalizing the agenda, please ensure that during one of the talks, people are
informed about how they can contribute photographs to Wikipedia. A lot of Mumbai-related
articles don't have any photographs. Even the Wikipedia article on the venue (VJTI)
doesn't have any pics other than the logo! I've added around 150 articles to this
category today alone:
and there are many more wall-of-text articles.
The Bangalore Wikipedians are already planning a session on photography:
<http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangalore#Photography> They are also organizing a
photo walk tomorrow to promote addition of Bangalore-related photographs. I don't
think we have time to organize a photo-walk before the 15th, but we can at least attract
some attention to the need for photographs. Several newbie contributors I've
interacted with during the past meetups don't understand the concepts like CC licenses
or the difference between Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Things can be made easier for
them with a 5-minute quick introduction to the topic.
Also, nearly 60 people have registered for the event with one week to go for the event. I
guess this number will rise by a good margin in the coming days? Do we enough volunteers?
Maybe we can create a page similar to
<http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangalore#Volunteers>.
