Suggestion(a)gmail.com या
The information on the occasion of Marathi Bhasha din
Marathi Bhasha Divasa Greetings.
On this occasion, we would like to share a few things with you.
The website www.saakava.com was launched on May 1, 2010- the Golden Jubilee of
Maharashtra. The website gives translation of an English sentence into Marathi.
The Machine Translation software Saakava carries out this translation. The
software has been somewhat primitive( a pre-beta version) so far. We have been
improvising it on a regular basis and will continue to do so. A number of
suggestions from users and sentences tried by the visitors of the website were
taken into account while making such changes.
A project of this type dealing with languages belonging to different families of
languages is very time-consuming and it involves a sizeable financial investment
also. It could be possibly the first of its type – at least the first which is
so user-friendly.
At present, it deals with nearly two lakh words/word groups/phrases. It handles
types of sentences which a seventh standard student ( from a Marathi medium
school) is expected to know. The process of incorporating more advanced types of
sentences is in progress.
Some experts in the translation studies and profession encouraged us by writing
e-mails of appreciation. There were some useful suggestions also. A tenth
standard student form Mumbai, whose mother tongue is not Marathi, wrote that
Saakava turned out to be useful while studying Marathi. A number of individuals
helped either directly or indirectly. Many thanks to all of them.
The version which is being presented on the occasion of Marathi Bhasha Divasa
has a special feature. It gives Marathi words ( paaribhashik words) for
technical words from various subjects. Our website gives more details. Of
course, some other sites also give such lists. Work on branches such as Grammar,
Ecology and Medicine has been undertaken. It will be very convenient to have
on-line availability of such words.
You can participate in this project in a variety of ways :
1. Please visit the project today. Also, keep on visiting frequently. Since the
software is being updated regularly, some of the mistakes that you find may have
been corrected later on.
2. Sentences that you input are very useful to us. Sentences of various types
help us in improving the software.
3. If you find that a particular type of sentence pattern is always incorrect,
please write to us at Saakava.Suggestion(a)gmail.com
4. Please forward this email to your friends and those who could be interested
in English-Marathi translation.
5. Please try to promote Saakava via forums related to translation, machine
translation, social networking sites like orkut/facebook and blogs. This will
allow Saakava to reach a large number of individuals.
Thanks and best regards.
Sincerely,
Saakava group.
hi,
We had a Wikipedia Mumbai Meetup today where the Mumbai Wikimedia community
was introduced to Hisham Mundol who has taken charge "WMF Consultant for
National Programs, India.".
We had a wide ranging conversation today on several things. Listed below are
the meeting notes (in no particular order, to the best of my ability):
1. We had 13 attendees today at the historic Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf,
Bandra. (Historic because the first Wikipedia Mumbai meetup took place here)
2. Barry Newstead introduced Hisham Mundol with a brief about Hisham's
background work.
3. Hisham had brief conversation with all the attendees explaining that his
work was primarily to network with the community and the chapter in India,
find out best practices (what worked/what did not work) and try to see if it
is duplicable on a larger scale across other Wikimedia projects. He also
talked about watching these practices over timelines to understand impact
etc.
4. User:AroundtheGlobe made another brief comment about his idea of getting
pictures off Flickr of some of the unique situations that might not be
covered in a photowalk. He showed how he had approached users on flickr,
showed them how to upload images on Wikimedia Commons and also explained
licenses.
5. There was Nikhil Sheth and Rekha Sankhala who spoke about working in a
village in Raigad, taking instances of the English and Marathi wikipedias
along with Wikipedia for Schools instance. They shared the excitement that
students in Raigad had in learning about the existence of the Marathi
Wikipedia and also learning about the content present there. Nagarjuna also
talked about how they saw the lack of content on a certain article and
expressed their desire to edit Wikipedia and improve the article!
6. We discussed about how Wikipedia was present in school text books in
Maharashtra and Kerala.
7. We discussed the Workshop for Women in Wikipedia. I asked for help in
making it happen in Mumbai. Bishaka suggested contacting a faculty member in
SNDT University and Nagarjuna offered help. Nagarjuna said that many
people's fear of editing Wikipedia was that they would make mistakes.
8. Hisham asked about various ways in which people could be encouraged to
edit Wikipedia. We talked about small edits in places like English Wikipedia
if subjects of the person's interest was saturated or if the person was
afraid. These included simple stuff like categorising, making copy edits,
adding templates etc. There was also suggestions of contributing pictures to
Wikimedia Commons.
9. Hisham then asked if there could be one thing that we could say to a new
editor what it would be. The community thought that the concept of being
bold on Wikipedia should be communicated better. The question of speedy
deletions arose and how these discouraged new editors. User:AroundtheGlobe
suggested the use of the "under construction" template.
10. We had brief discussion on the work of the Salman Khan's Khan
Foundation. Some of us (me included :) ) thought it was Salman Khan, the
actor :). We stood corrected.
11. Vickram said that discussion had centred around how to get students and
people in schools and universities involved. However, effort should also be
made to involve adults since they had access to certain knowledge that was
dying.
12. Conversation turned to making the meetups more interesting. Barry
suggested mixing up the content and having topic-specific meetups like done
by the folks in Bangalore. I suggested having alternate meetups with
WikiAcademy. This meant that people coming for the meetup could be told
something concrete about there being an academy where they could learn how
to participate.

Hi Emmanuel,
Thanks for your detailed help!
Taking it to the logical next step, I've created a wiki page for this
campaign:
http://education.wikia.com/wiki/Wikipedia_For_Schools_Offline_Edition
I will do my best to incorporate all your advice there; requesting you to
jump in as well!
All are requested to gather here and collaborate! (including mumbai and pune
wikipedia lists here as well). Urging the volunteers who obtain the
wikipedia for schools dump to enlist themselves here, and we'll be listing
the schools that we empower - one by one!
I'm proud to mention that a school I'm volunteering in Pune, where some
Teach For India fellows are teaching, is the first "empowered" school, where
I've installed Wikipedia for Schools in the computer lab and the office!
It's an under-resourced school but now the kids there have access to a
wealth of knowledge! And you should see them in action!
Why I created the page in wikia : In Wikipedia, when I went to create a new
page, it clearly said the content ought to be encyclopedic in nature -
whereas THIS is more of a movement and recruitment page. So to be on the
safe side I went to the education wikia where things are a little sparse ;).
I've worked with wikia in toastmasters.wikia.com and am comfortable with it.
If anyone can establish a good location on wikipedia itself, which doesn't
get deleted later, and migrate everything there, it'll be great! There are
lots of external links on this so need to be careful.
Further plans (if you guys can help!):
1. A proliferation meetup where a lot of us can get together and copy the
dump to our laptop/netbook/USB drive. 1 goes to 20... and we can scale up
the project like crazy.
2. To tie up with DVD distributors and bulk-produce, provided the costs are
as low as humanly possible. Maybe Wikimedia India could maintain a stock?
(Seemingly Impossible) Requests:
1. Can anybody add a link to versions of Kiwix that work on non-Windows OS's
like Linux, Apple, Android? My focus is on Android, for future mobile
perspective...
2. Can we get a version of this that doesn't have Image files? Then the size
will be much lesser. Of course, that's less attractive, but I'm looking for
an opportunity to take this to mobile devices. How can we edit a .ZIM file?
Cheers,
Nikhil Sheth

Hi,
probably a lot of people know http://www.khanacademy.org . Really cool
stuff, that could potentially be a great base for Wikibooks etc, and
Wikimedia could possibly be a great help in getting stuff translated,
subtitled etc. However, it is NC-licensed.
Did anyone ever have contact with Salman Khan about licensing under CCBYSA?
