Bart--might you consider starting a regular history meetup, or get the ball
rolling with a one-time event? A few simple shout-outs to the right places
have gotten me more enthusiasm than I could ever have imagined. I'm a San
Diego native. Now THAT is a spectacularly interesting part of the world--I
personally would love to see more content in general, and more
bi/multilingual content in specific.

San Francisco Bay Area Wiki Meetup at the Computer History Museum
Time: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 4pm to 8pm.

Meet Wikipedians and help edit a museum exhibit about Wikipedia!
The purpose of the meet up is twofold:
1. Meet fellow Wikipedians in the San Francisco Bay/Silicon Valley area
while getting a behind the scenes tour of the Computer History Museum.
2. Help edit this exhibit! The Museum is crafting an exhibit about
Wikipedia that will debut in 2013. What should an exhibit about Wikipedia
have? How should it display Wikipedia's activities, live, for visitors? Who
better than ask than Wikipedians. Meet the museum staff to brainstorm
around ideas and how to display and visualize Wikipedia to the public.

California universities to produce 50 open-source textbooks
via Ars Technica by Timothy B. Lee on 9/28/12
California Governor Jerry Brown gave his pen a workout yesterday. In
addition to signing legislation prohibiting social network snooping by
employers and colleges, he also has also signed off on a proposal for
the state to fund 50 open source digital textbooks. He signed two
bills, one to create the the textbooks and the other to establish a
California Digital Open Source Library to host them, at a meeting with
students in Sacramento.
According to a legislative summary, the textbook bill would "require
the California Open Education Resources Council to determine a list of
50 lower division courses in the public postsecondary segments for
which high-quality, affordable, digital open source textbooks and
related materials would be developed or acquired." The council is to
solicit bids to produce these textbooks in 2013. The bill makes clear
that the council has the option to use "existing high-quality digital
open source textbooks and related materials" if those materials fit
the requirements.
The law specifies that the textbooks must be placed under a Creative
Commons license, allowing professors at universities outside of
California to use the textbooks in their own classrooms. The textbooks
must be encoded in XML, or "other appropriate successor format," to
facilitate re-use of the materials.

Dear Wikimedia California folks:
I'd like to announce an exciting opportunity for the week of August 13-17.
I've been working with the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA on
a GLAMwiki (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) gathering that
would provide a way for Wikipedians to work with the museum to improve
Wikipedia articles about objects in their collection. If you haven't been
to the museum, it's a spectacular facility in one of the famous Silicon
Graphics buildings in Silicon Valley and hosts a new permanent collection
about computing machinery through the ages. (http://www.computerhistory.org/
)
Even more interesting, the museum plans to have an exhibit next year about
seven software technologies that have changed our lives, and Wikipedia will
be one of them. This get-together would also be a time to brainstorm and
have Wikipedians give direct input into what is believed to be the first
physical museum exhibit about Wikipedia.
This would likely be a 4-8pm event on one of the evenings of the week of
August 13-17.
Interested parties, please contact me by email or as User:Fuzheado on
English Wikipedia on which days you might prefer, and I'll send out a
followup notice.
