Fair enough. It could probably be said that had they expressed
themselves in their own words rather than with a cookie cutter
userbox, this goal would be achieved even better.

True, and I've never personally used templates to search for people,
whether for good purposes or bad ones, so I really don't have any
*proof* that such userboxes are used that way. But I've always been
of the opinion that the good effects of giving people more information
outweighs the bad effects. In fact, it's that opinion that brought me
to Wikipedia in the first place.
