The problem is that the main page is exceedingly dull and off-putting to
new users. It's also not clear what we are all about, and gives to good
example of the hard work we have put into Wikipedia.
.org is a US domain, a country that speaks primarily English. Those who
visit it are reasonably expected to speak English.
