Dear Community,
I would like to remind you of our ongoing research
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Deutschland/Knowledge_Equity_in_L…>
and your chance to participate!
The goal of this project is to better understand how the use of Wikidata,
Wikibase Suite, and Wikibase Cloud both support knowledge equity and create
barriers to knowledge equity when people are contributing historically and
structurally marginalized knowledge and perspectives.
What is learned in this project will directly inform WMDE product decisions
toward removing barriers and better supporting knowledge equity in the
Wikimedia LOD ecosystem.
Wondering how you might contribute?
We would like to talk with you for an hour or an hour and a half, or the
time you're available, about your experience contributing knowledge using
the products mentioned above.
In short, these interviews will be:
-
fairly compensated
-
recorded and documented (only with permission of participants)
-
take place between February 9 and March 29, 2024
-
stored on Design Research Services Google drive (until the project ends
May 31, 2024, when it will be deleted)
-
deleted at any time upon participant’s request.
-
summarized for findings (participants will remain anonymous unless
otherwise requested)
If you are interested in participating in this project, please fill out this
survey <https://greatquestion.co/wmde/4c3dr1vk>

Dear Wikibase/Wikidata Community,
We are trying to understand which database technologies and strategies Wikibase/Wikidata uses for storing, updating, and querying the data (knowledge) it manipulates.
By looking at the documentation<https://wmde.github.io/wikidata-wikibase-architecture/assets/img/03-dataflo…> we understood that RDF is only used for the Wikidata Query Service, but we could not find out exactly how Wikibase/Wikidata stores the information that is translated to RDF during the data dump.
More specifically, we understood that a MySQL (or is it MariaDB?) relational database is used as the key persistence component for most of Wikibase/Wikidata services and that the information that is maintained in this database is periodically exported to multiple formats, including RDF.
In addition, looking at the relational database schema published in the documentation<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Database_layout> we could not locate tables that are easily mappable to the Wikibase Data Model<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase/DataModel>.
Thus, we hypothesize that there is some software component (Wikibase Common Data Access?) that dynamically translates the data contained in those tables to Statements, Entities, etc. Is that hypothesis, correct?
If yes, does this software component uses any intermediate storage mechanism for caching those Statements, Entities, ...? Or are those translations always performed at runtime on-the-fly (be it for querying, adding, or updating Statements, Entities, …)?
Finally, we would like to understand more about how Wikidata REST API<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:REST_API> is implemented:
• In which database are the statements that added/retrieved through it stored? Is it being stored in the central MySQL database or in another database?
• Does it have any support for pagination of statements? For example, if an item has many statements associated with a property, does the API assumes that both the underlying database and the network will support the retrieval of all those statements?
• Are you currently considering implementing the support for more flexible querying of statements, or such requirement has been fully delegated to the Wikidata Query Service?
If there is an updated documentation that could help us answer those questions, could you kindly point us to it? Otherwise, would you be able to share this information with us?
Best Regards,

Dear Community,
I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve found a new way to try to prevent spam
in your Wikibases!
You’ve often reported that many spam accounts were being created on your
Wikis (see this ticket <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T327176> for more
context).
We started looking for an additional security layer to prevent this in the
future, or at least to make it more difficult to get around for spammers.
This is where Questy
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:QuestyCaptcha> comes into play.
QuestyCaptcha can be more effective than either ReCaptcha or HCaptcha,
since it requires a set of questions and answers that you choose to make
them harder to be answered by non-legitimate users.
If you’re suffering from spam account signups, give it a try and let us
know how it goes.
We would love to hear whether it makes your life easier and whether the
number of spam accounts has been reduced with this new feature. Feel free
to use this ticket <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T342143> or our other
channels for feedback.
Thanks for being on this journey with us! :-)

Dear Wikibase Community,
This is my last message for this year.
Be aware, it’s a longer one, but it contains nothing but gratitude and
enthusiasm.
I've been reflecting on what these last months looked like, and I would
like to mention that you've played a big role in it.
How so?
You've helped me understand Wikibase better. Yes, I'm still learning - just
like all of us - but I can see how I can make much more sense of your
conversations and requests today.
You introduced me to an open and welcoming culture, where new users can
find support and guidance when needed.
You responded to our surveys
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikibase_Cloud_UX_Research.pdf>
and took the time to help us understand where we needed to look more
closely and realign our goals.
You've been so patient. All these ElasticSearch struggles we've been
through. Wow. I can promise, we will do our best to make this experience as
smooth as possible in the future because we have definitely learned more
about the hick-ups of that specific feature.
You've been great advocates! I loved following your visits to presentations
where you showed your Wikibase projects to existing and new audiences.
You've been honest. There is nothing better than constructive feedback, and
I would like to thank you for that as well. Not everyone can like a logo or
a website or a new design, and that is what makes a community with
different perspectives. I appreciate that we communicate on a ground where
compliments and criticism can co-exist.
Specifically for Cloud users: you've been great co-pilots in moving from
close to open beta. We are beyond excited about this development and we can
already see the outcomes. Since we've made that change, we've seen 162
Wikibases created on Wikibase Cloud and using it.
I would also like to use this space and highlight some product successes
this year:
-
Wikibase Cloud was established as a product in its own right: hosting
nearly 800 Wikibases, with 358 active ones accessible through the Discovery
tool <https://www.wikibase.cloud/discovery> released in summer this
year, and a distinct identity, complete with a logo and homepage
<https://www.wikibase.cloud/>.
-
Infrastructure enhancements have significantly improved Wikibase Cloud's
uptime and data/service availability.
-
We transitioned from a private beta to an open beta in September,
underlining our confidence in the platform and ongoing commitment to
expanding Wikibase Cloud.
-
The Docker packages of Wikibase Suite are now in sync with the MediaWiki
releases, with the latest release for version 1.40.
-
Significant work was put into the Wikibase release pipeline to improve
and simplify the experience of people self-hosting and managing Wikibases.
-
Valuable insights from research initiatives have driven improvements,
especially in documentation <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase>,
and more will be addressed in 2024.
On a sad note, we have to say goodbye to our great Product Manager Evelien
Zandbergen. See announcement
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikibase-cloud@lists.wikimedia.…>
here.
If you want to read more about what we did this year, you can check the updates
section <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikibase/Wikibase.cloud> on our
meta page.
On a more general note, I thought it’d be nice to link to some other
highlights.
-
We visited ICOM conference this year. Take a look at our pictures
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Stand_at_20th_ICOM_CC…>
and the blog post
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/11/28/wikimedia-at-the-icom-conference-2023/>
of this meaningful week.
-
Pilot Workshops
<https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikibase_in_Nigerian_Libraries/Phase_Two_…>
at Nigerian Library
-
Workshop <https://www.goethe.de/ins/gr/el/ver.cfm?event_id=24683756> at
Goethe Institute in Thessaloniki, Greece
-
We had great conversations with Wikibase users who shared their
experiences with Wikibase. They resulted in blog posts that are available
to everyone. You can find them with this link
<https://tech-news.wikimedia.de/>. (Spoiler, you will see many more
articles coming up on this blog in the future!)
-
We created a new visual identity
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikibase_logos#> for
Wikibase!
Let’s meet again for our next Live Session on the 25th of January, where we
will announce our quarterly goals as well as the outcomes of our end of the
year survey. :-)
Thanks again for your patience, your support and your great engagement!
Yours,
Valerie on behalf of Wikibase Cloud, Suite and Software Communications.
