Pursuant to prior discussions about the need for a research
policy on Wikipedia, WikiProject Research is drafting a
policy regarding the recruitment of Wikipedia users to
participate in studies.
At this time, we have a proposed policy, and an accompanying
group that would facilitate recruitment of subjects in much
the same way that the Bot Approvals Group approves bots.
The policy proposal can be found at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Research
The Subject Recruitment Approvals Group mentioned in the proposal
is being described at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Subject_Recruitment_Approvals_Group
Before we move forward with seeking approval from the Wikipedia
community, we would like additional input about the proposal,
and would welcome additional help improving it.
Also, please consider participating in WikiProject Research at:

Hi all,
Phoebe Ayers and I are leading a workshop at WikiSym this year,
"WikiLit: Collecting the Wiki and Wikipedia Literature". We would love
to have your participation!
This workshop has three key goals. First, we will examine existing and
proposed systems for collecting and analyzing the research literature
about wikis. Second, we will discuss the challenges in building such a
system and will engage participants to design a sustainable
collaborative system to achieve this goal. Finally, we will provide a
forum to build upon ongoing wiki community discussions about problems
and opportunities in finding and sharing the wiki research literature.
For more details, please see:
http://www.wikisym.org/ws2011/workshop:wikilit
Please do not hesitate to ask questions, either by replying here on the
list or by contacting me or Phoebe (psayers(a)ucdavis.edu) directly.
Looking forward to seeing you at WikiSym!

Hi,
I am planning to study the difference in users edits style and their
spelling errors in English Wikipedia as part of a research project I am
involved in.
So I downloaded some of the wikipedia XML partial dump and convert them to
SQL. My understanding that wikipedia stores every copy of the pages in the
database.
- I can not see the users table! Is the users table stored in a special
partial dump?
- Does the user table contain any properties related to the user country,
preferred wikipeidas, or their skill in different languages ?
- I am interested in the user modifications that contain addition to the
articles and not modification or deletion. I am planning now to diff between
revisions to get such data. Are you aware of any tool or effort that can
help?
- Are you aware of any tools that extract the text from wikipedia markup
language.
Regards.

I've been looking to experiment with node.js lately and created a
little toy webapp that displays updates from the major language
wikipedias in real time:
http://wikistream.inkdroid.org
Perhaps like you, I've often tried to convey to folks in the GLAM
sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) just how much
Wikipedia is actively edited. GLAM institutions are increasingly
interested in "digital curation" and I've sometimes displayed the IRC
activity at workshops to demonstrate the sheer number of people (and
bots) that are actively engaged in improving the content there...with
the hopes of making the Wikipedia platform part of their curation
strategy.
Anyhow, I'd be interested in any feedback you might have about wikistream.

ENGLISH, CATALAN, SPANISH VERSION
Forum Building Digital Commons and Collaborative Communities
29th - 30th October 2011, Barcelona, Catalonia & Online http://www.digital-commons.net
Building Digital Commons and Collaborative Communities is a new initiative aiming to bring together individuals, collective and organizations from different Free and Open Collaborative Communities, Digital Commons Initiatives and Researchers in the area to identify ways to support and learn from each other and collaborate in order to promote together digital commons.
Why?
The new technologies offered a big opportunity to create, innovate and collaborate to share and build information and knowledge resources. However, we are living challenging times, with an ongoing growth of the enclosure of the commons.
i) We want to promote the “makers” and “ doers” approach: To increase the visibility of the initiatives that are based on building digital commons.
ii) Systematize experiences & learn from each other (at the legal, infrastructural, sustainable, participation and governance levels).
ii) Map the digital public spaces and promote common actions
iv) Create public procommons references: To underline the distinction between the governance of digital commons and other forms of corporate-providers not based on free and open infrastructure.
v) Build bridges between action and research on commons as a form of governance, production and horizon for social transformation.
What?
We will address collaboratively and critically a series of working lines:
1. Participation and engagement in communities
2. Sustainability formulas and dialogue between social digital economy and cooperativism
3. Mapping a variety of digital commons initiatives and to define a common strategy
A "How to manual on digital commons: participation engagement, sustainability formulas and over all digital commons networking" and a "Digital commons alliance/network" will be the resulting outcomes of the event.

*
Traçar un plànol del procomú digital i promoure accions comunes.
*
Crear referències a favor del domini públic: Per remarcar la diferència entre la infraestructura online lliure i oberta i sota governança comuna i altres formes de provisió d'infraestructura online corporativa.
*
*
