Other than the content, the main appearance difference is because the CSS is
missing. The base template uses the geography and infobox classes. The CSS
which goes with those can be found from MediaWiki:Common.css. Once you
change your own MediaWiki:Common.css page, be sure to force your browser to
do a full reload so it picks up the new CSS file (ctrl-F5 in IE,
ctrl-shift-r in Firefox).
You'll also want to be aware of MediaWiki:Monobook.css.
