I was wondering if there is an extension to MediaWiki that adds either bread crumbs or ideally makes the "hierarchical" page links in to clickable links. Where I have a sub page with the page title :- Reference Manual/Base Types I want the "Reference Manual" bit to be a link back to the main Reference_Manual page Basically not having this is annoying as you have to either go back to the main page then select the "Reference Manual" page again. Either that or chop then end off the URL in the browser. If not how do I get at the variables in the MonoBook.php to implement this ? Many thanks in advance, Aaron

OK, sorry, from your first post it sounded like you weren't getting the breadcrumb links underneath the page title, e.g. on: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/HyperText_Markup_Language/Tag_List/html If you want the title itself to exhibit breadcrumb links, then you'll need an extension as you said, or some nifty JavaScript. That's near enough exactly what I want, except for, to do it to the actual title line. That's standard on WikiBooks ? How do I get that on a normal MediaWiki instillation ?

That's near enough exactly what I want, except for, to do it to the actual title line. That's standard on WikiBooks ? How do I get that on a normal MediaWiki instillation ? I have MediaWiki 1.11.0 installed, do I need to update or is it an addon ?

OK, no worries. Check your $wgNamespacesWithSubpages settings, so that at least you can get the standard breadcrumbs. Just to repeat the question: We know that there is a page MediaWiki:Tagline which you can use to modify the tagline output. The only problem: internal links [[...]] are not parsed properly. Platonides suggested a function to do precisely that:

To make that work, change at Skin.php wfMsgExt( 'tagline', 'parsemag' ) to wfMsgExt( 'bernhard-breadcrumbs', 'parse' ) and you will be able to add that code to MediaWiki:bernhard-breadcrumbs

So the problem seems to be the difference between "parsemag" and "parse" in the PHP code. However,Platonides function does not seem to work, at least in my environment (1.15). My system ignores all changes in the wfMsgExt(...) function at Skin.php. So the question is: How can I make the system recognize Platonides' function or else, what other function may influence the parsing of MediaWiki:Tagline (or its aliases)? Bernhard

I once had a similar question, for Platonides' answer see below. Unfortunately, Platonides' advice, how to manipulate the tagline output, did not work. My software does not care about the function in Skin.php, but continues to use MediaWiki:Tagline (Which can be altered to some extent, though, if you first change the CSS to make the tagline = page subtitle visible). Probably I have to add something in order to make Platonides function work?
