yep that was the problem, MW was asking for a capital first letter even
though we put a lowercase letter on the login form.
changing it to a capital letter in the database for the usernames worked.
thanks,
Isaac

Hi,
Is there an IDE for PHP (like Visual Studio)? I would like to single step
MW
code so that I can find out why a user name is not
recognized, even if it
exists in the user table?
You might try Zend Studio; IIRC there's a 60-day free evaluation. It has an
integrated debugger, though I found it somewhat awkward to use with
MediaWiki.
Also check the debug log modes (see DefaultSettings.php for all available
configuration options); you can dump all SQL statements executed to the log
by
setting $wgDebugDumpSql.
If your usernames aren't being found, you should first double-check that
they
are valid. Note:
* usernames must be valid wiki page titles
* usernames are additionally required to be capitalized, even on a wiki with
initial-case-sensitivity enabled
* the user_name field is stored with spaces, not underscores as page_title
is
* as with everything else in the wiki, they are encoded in UTF-8
