Hi all,
Would you like to get more people taking part in the Wikimedia Foundation’s
Board of Trustees election?
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees announced the plan for the 2021
Board elections
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard/2021…>.
That plan includes outreach and communication support for the Board
elections. The Board election facilitators will:
- Inform communities of the trustee selection process
- Invite communities to engage in voting
- Encourage people representing emerging Wikimedia communities to run as
candidates
Voter turnout in prior elections was about 10% globally. It was better in
communities with volunteer election support. Some of those communities
reached over 20% voter turnout. We know we can get more voters to help
assess and promote the best candidates, but to do that, we need your help.
We are looking for volunteers to serve as Election Volunteers. Election
Volunteers should have a good understanding of their communities. The
facilitation team sees Election Volunteers as doing the following:
- Promote the election in their communities’ channels
- Organize discussions about the election in their communities
- Translate messages for their communities
*Who are the Election Volunteers to connect your community with this
movement effort? Is it you? Or someone you know?* *Check out more details
about Election Volunteers*
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/Electio…>
and
add your name next to the community you will support in this table
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/Electio…>
or get in contact with a facilitator
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021#Team>.
We aim to have at least one Election Volunteer for Wiki Projects in the top
30 for eligible voters. Even better if there are two or more sharing the
work.
Best,

Hi everyone,
The episode actually came out last week, but I forgot to send an email
about it before. Anyway, the latest episode of the MediaWiki podcast
"Between the Brackets" features an interview with Jon Robson, a Wikimedia
Foundation developer who is heavily involved in, among other things,
improving the look-and-feel of the Vector skin. We talked about that and
various other topics, and you can hear the interview here:
https://betweenthebrackets.libsyn.com/episode-86-jon-robson
We also recorded this one on video, so if you prefer, you can see the
episode here:

Hello all,
The Wikimedia Hackathon
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021> is starting
tomorrow, and will run from May 21st to 23rd. We’re very excited to gather
online with you all and hack together!
This event is taking place online across various time zones, and you can
join us at any point! If you want to participate, feel free to add yourself in
the participants list
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021/Participants>, and
to look at whom the other attendees are, so you can find people sharing the
same interests.
If you are planning to work on a project during the hackathon, if you are
looking for co-maintainers for your tools or for ideas of tasks, the best
place to look at is the Phabricator board
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/board/5303/>. Feel free to add
tasks in the “projects” or “need support” column. Don’t forget to add a
clear description of the project, and to mention what kind of help or
skills you would need.
On top of this, to connect and discuss with other participants, we
recommend joining our discussions channels
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021/Discussions>. You
can join the main hackathon channel via IRC or Telegram. You will also find
the newcomers support channel on Telegram. If you are looking for help on
your project or if you are looking for a project to contribute to, these
are good places to find support.
The opening of the hackathon will take place on Friday 21st at 17:00 UTC on
the Mediawiki Youtube channel <https://www.youtube.com/user/watchmediawiki>.
There will be no “project matching” session this year, that’s why it is
especially important to add your ideas and projects on Phabricator, so
other people can see them. The showcase
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021/Showcase>, where
you can demo your work, will take place on Sunday. You can find the most
up-to-date information about the program on the schedule page
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021/Schedule>.
Finally, if you have any questions about the event, feel free to use this
talk page <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021>
where the coordination team and other participants will be happy to help.
See you soon at the hackathon!
For the coordination team,
Neslihan
Hello all,
I wanted to send a heads-up to various places that MediaWiki 1.31, the
legacy LTS release, will be End-of-Life as of next month, June 2021.[0]
There will be a final release to follow-on from the current latest version
1.31.14 coming out soon, but it may have slipped people's mind that this
deadline is approaching so swiftly.
System administrators still using 1.31 are encouraged to start their
migration to the current LTS release, 1.35. MediaWiki 1.35, released in
September 2020, will be supported until September 2023. If you don't
require LTS support, you will be able to upgrade to 1.36 which will be
supported till May 2022 once it is released, before the end of the month.
As always, please be mindful of the upgrade instructions, especially
including making a back-up of your database, and testing extension
compatibility.
Thanks!

Adding `?action=info` to the URL for any page on your wiki (or any
MediaWiki wiki) will show you information about the page including
it's editing protection rights.
Looking at <http://wiki.servision.net/index.php/SVClientSDK2?action=info>
it appears that the page is not protected at all, so the lack of an
edit button points to some other configuration for the wiki or problem
with its setup.
It is difficult to troubleshoot this remotely as this wiki seems to
have been configured with attempts to hide pages like
<http://wiki.servision.net/index.php/Special:Version> and
<http://wiki.servision.net/index.php/Special:SpecialPages> from
anonymous users.
The next thing I would recommend looking at with your authenticated
user account is
<http://wiki.servision.net/index.php/Special:ListGroupRights> and
specifically looking to see which groups have the `Edit pages (edit)`
right. This right is the base permission that is need to edit any page
in the wiki. See <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:User_rights>
for information on how you might change the granted user rights if
desired.
