How do Wiki Farms work? I want to build and sell a product that is a private MediaWiki site that can ingest logs and display them in templates and still have room for people to add notes about the device or service being logged using the Cargo and probably the ExternalData extensions. The problem is that I haven't seen the back end of a Wiki Farm yet so I don't know how one typically works. I know what I need. I need to build a site with the necessarily minimal plugins for functionality, a way to upgrade the mediawiki instances, a way to potentially upgrade php, a database with 1-2 schema per site, and probably all of the templates packed into one plugin for ease of management. My first plan would be to make Ansible do everything on the back end and have a php button kick it off. Extensions are either in beta or not maintained. The Ultimate minimalist solution are symlinks and an array. Writing a program to writes another program perfectly every time is not something I know how to do just yet. Using git to upgrade all of the web code sounds like a good idea right now though. I think copying the WikiMedia method would make a little more sense because I have an account there and I see that it works and haven't heard any complaints recently. The whole thing is template based and is primed to be done by ansible which is also template based. I could try Drupal-style sites, but I never had good luck with Drupal. I am still going to bit by the fact that they will have to be private wikis that don't share most users except for the the farm administrators is going to add another issue potentially. I will also need to eventually get another factor of authentication in because people demand it, but there is probably something in PHP already. https ://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Two-factor_authentication already works apparently. I do need to figure out some failover so I don't have to babysit the thing too much and so I can upgrade the Operating System. I want to attempt this project, but I don't know if I know enough about Wiki Farms yet to start. Guess I can try it and fail a few times and I can tell you what I didn't know, but is there anything obvious other than marketing.

Announcing the Wikimedia Technical Conference

Hi everyone. This is a time of important change for technology and the Wikimedia movement. We are evolving our platform to better support, grow, and prepare the movement for the future to realize our strategic goals of Knowledge as a Service and Knowledge Equity. Our vision is to host a different type of event in 2018 — to make informed decisions in the evolution of our platform while building our technical community engagement and enhancing our product vision. We want to be able to gather and discuss to determine our future direction and that of our shared platform; to communicate more broadly our product vision and to build a solid and stable base for our volunteer developer community. Future years will have have different focuses and themes. We also want to learn from our experiences during previous technically oriented events to improve our focus, enhance outcomes, and to give ourselves the time and space to have informed, substantive, and timely conversations — this all starts with the overall theme of the event. The January 2018 Developer Summit (in Berkeley, California) event had a broad goal to look at ways that technology can support our strategic direction. A concrete outcome of those discussions was acknowledging the need to evolve our core platform for the road ahead. In light of that outcome, we will hold future events with themes that reflect our evolving priorities and opportunities to support and enhance the Wikimedia movement with technology. Therefore, our next technical event will be focused on Platform Evolution. We will hold a 4 day conference with topics that pertain to the Platform Evolution goals that we want to achieve in the next 3 to 5 years with a shared understanding of the product vision around those goals while also enhancing technical engagement within the Foundation and embracing and empowering our large community of volunteer developers. Day 1: Product driven discussions on the how’s and why’s of our shared goals. Day 2 & 3: A deep dive into specific technical ideas, concerns, and outcomes around the newly formed Platform Evolution cross-departmental program. Day 4: An unconference / ‘get stuff done’ format along with sessions on building and sustaining our developer community. We are also moving the time of year that we’ll hold this new event. The previously established timeframe had been in January, typically adjacent to the annual Foundation All Hands gathering, to allow for co-location of events. However, feedback from both the DevSummit and All Hands participants indicates that both events need more time to accomplish their goals. All Hands is a once-a-year event that many teams use to come together, face to face, for working meetings; as well as the entire Foundation getting together for meetings. Going forward, we will decouple the DevSummit from All Hands, to give both gatherings the time and space that all attendees need to be productive and successful. This first of the event series will take place in Q2 of our fiscal year 2018-2019, in October 2018, and will be held in Portland, OR, USA. This timing was chosen to give us the opportunity to formulate plans, proposals, and programs in time for the Foundation annual planning cycle which starts in January 2019. Since we have a new focus and want to expand upon the successes of the Developer Summit events from years past — we will now call this gathering of like-minded technologists the Wikimedia Technical Conference (WM TechCon). Stay tuned for more information on the formation of the program committee and the participant’s selection process, as we are making quite a few changes based on the feedback collected from previous events. indexing an existing file store with Mediawiki

Hi Folks, Can you guys help me determine if the following idea is possible with Mediawiki. Givens -- 1. Read-only access to a pre-existing file repository on the server with a well-defined folder structure. 2. The file repository is frozen. No new files or folders are being added to this remote repository. 3. The folder structure is an important part of how users are used to finding what they are looking for. Problem -- There is a need to allow users to discuss these files and annotate them with updated information about the use, context, accuracy, and relevancy of the files .. and in some cases, where there should be referred to instead. Desired Solution -- Implement a web-based application that "indexes" the files in their existing file structure and provides a collaborative framework for users to generate supplemental information regarding the use, context, accuracy, and relevancy of the files .. and where they should be referred to instead. The Result --- The original file store is untouched and we have a wiki where every file in the remote store has been indexed by mediawiki and is searchable by name and the mediawiki users can begin build wiki articles in the usual way referencing the files as articles in the file namespace. My first question to all of you here is --- Is this possible with Mediawiki? And, if so, my second question is: Would the following approach be right? 1. Install a fresh copy of mediawiki (latest) onto a new web-server 2. Disable file uploads from the wiki 3. configure the wiki to see the existing file repository as the image folder (something like: $wgUploadPath = "<path to remote file store>"; 4. run a maintenance script that (re)builds the mediawiki file list from the current files of the remote file repository but does not import actual files. 5. (ideally adds a link the image path as the text of the file article.) That's my hope. What are the challenges in using Mediawiki for this type of application? Are there any extensions that anyone knows of that have this kind of application in mind? Has anyone attempted this with any level of success? Thank you! -Rich

Unable to install any version other than MW 1.28

Hi All, I have a wiki currently running MW 1.28. I have tried upgrading to 1.30, starting with a fresh 1.30 install and copying the directory for another wiki using 1.29. The only constant is the name of the directory (I moved the old directory and created a new one with the same name. No matter what I do, despite the files in the directory seeming to reflect the version 1.30 or 1.29, The version says 1.28. This happens whether I copy in the old Local Settings and thus the database or start with an entirely new install with no connection to the old install other than the same directory name. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this issue? Dustin Phillips
