Sounds sensible. Thank you.
Unfortutately, as a consequence of one of their changes, data has
been partially lost (apparently only redirects and a few templates and
images) and I think several tables are corrupted in the sense they
contain data which shouldn't be there, so I'm even considering an
export and then and import (with history, of course) for articles and
the like, and only resort to the database for users (this table seems
ok) and the like (just brainstrorming). <sigh>

Posting to the list.
Before posting to this list, please read the MediaWiki FAQ[10]. Many common
questions are answered here. You may also search the list archives to see if
your question has been asked before.
Please try to ask your question in a way that enables people to answer you.
Provide all relevant details, explain your problem clearly, etc. You may
wish to read [13], which explains how to ask questions well.
To post to the list, send mail to <mediawiki-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>. This is a
public list, so you should not include confidential information in mails you
send.
When replying to an existing thread, use the "Reply" or "Followup" feature of
your mail client, so that clients that understand threading can sort your
message properly. When quoting other messages, please use the "inline" quoting
style[11], for clarity.
When creating a new thread, do not reply to an existing message and change the
subject. This will confuse peoples' mail readers, and will result in fewer
people reading your mail. Instead, compose a new message for your post.
Messages posted to the list have the "Reply-To" header set to the mailing list,
which means that by default, replies will go to the entire list. If you are
posting a reply which is only interesting to the original poster, and not the
list in general, you should change the reply to only go to that person. This
avoids cluttering the list with irrelevant traffic.

So I asked around and was told that this should be the appropriate list to
post this too...
We are looking for a few brave programmers that believe in the battle cry of
"citation needed!"
We want to create a special easy to install open source tool for citability
on mediawiki. We already have teams in other platforms such as Drupal,
DotNetNuke, and Wordpress.
We will be demoing this tool and others in front of a gathering of govt
officials and employees on April 11th in Washington DC. And again later in
California.
So many of the citability features already exist in mediawiki: such as the
permalinks, the ability to have those permalinks point at a specific
paragraph, pubsubhub to a Bazaar archive server instance. We just need to
make it easy for govt people to add to a default mediawiki installation.
So please sign up http://dccodeathon.eventbrite.com
and read more about Citability at citability.pbworks.com
or to sign up and work on the addition at
http://dccodeathon.pbworks.com/Project
Thank you!

Hi all,
I have been playing with mediawiki for past 6 months and I am getting more
and more comfortable with it and I like it a lot. Now I am thinking to start
writing extensions for mediawiki starting from very simple (Hello world
types) extensions. I am familiar with PHP and have done some LAMP based
database driven websites.
Can someone recommend a good source/pointers from where I can start learning
on how to write extensions? Also I would like to know what is the simplest
extension (based on lines of code) for mediawiki that is currently available
so that I can look at the source code and learn from it too.
Thanks
Hi folks,
I'm helping someone get their MediaWiki set up, and they need to use the
Texvc module to display the mathematical functions that are part of their
content.
The host provider (SiteGround) has installed the module, and it does work
some of the time, but fails other times. The provider has now declined to
offer further support, claiming that the module is correctly installed, so
I'm trying to figure out the next step I can take in debugging this
'occasional' problem.
An example of the error that we receive is:
Failed to parse (unknown error): \theta _{\text{0}}
And the page output may be seen here:

I am new to this list and apologize if I'm asking an old question - I had
not yet discovered it in the archives. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Charlie
I've recently installed the LightboxThumbs extension on a couple wikis
and like it pretty well. One significant problem (or lack of a solution,
anyway) is that the full size image is displayed in the image pop-up and
if the images you upload are large, it's not really very usable. Of
course, it's possible to upload two sets of images, one large and one
for use in galleries but since mediawiki already resizes images so well,
and since managing multiple sets of images just seems wrong, I wondered
if there would be some way to automate this.
What I was thinking was that when you go to an image's page you get a
scaled image on the page rather than the full size image (unless the
image is less than a certain size). Would there be some way for the
gallery code to automatically use that scalled image instead of the full
size image? So, I guess what I need is the code that looks for the
original image, checks its size and then decides what size to return to
the user.
Another thought I had was to write a new extension that creates a
totally new tag rather than rewriting the HTML generated by the
<gallery> tag. The advantage of that would be that you could have both
sorts of galleries on a site or even on a single page. I'd guess that to
do that I'd want to use code similar to what is done now by the standard
<gallery> code but have it work when something like <lightboxgallery> is
used instead. So, where should I look for the <gallery> code?
I hope that all makes sense. I've done a fair amount of PHP work but
frankly haven't looked too deeply into the MediaWiki code.

So I have been looking for an extension which can open a dialog box and a
user can browse/select a file that they want to link in the Wiki page using
the "file://" protocol. I finally found one extension [1] which claims it
will do the job. So I followed the instruction on how to use it and then
when I went to load my wiki home page I get the following error message
after enabling the detailed debugging information feature
($wgShowExceptionDetails = true;):
Detected bug in an extension! Hook filelinkDo failed to return a value;
should return true to continue hook processing or false to abort.
Backtrace:
#0 /usr/share/mediawiki/includes/Parser.php(378):
wfRunHooks('ParserBeforeTid...', Array)
#1 /usr/share/mediawiki/includes/Article.php(3174): Parser->parse('==
Welcome to {...', Object(Title), Object(ParserOptions), true, true, 1189)
#2 /usr/share/mediawiki/includes/Article.php(821):
Article->outputWikiText('== Welcome to {...')
#3 /usr/share/mediawiki/includes/Wiki.php(390): Article->view()
#4 /usr/share/mediawiki/includes/Wiki.php(48):

Object(User), Object(WebRequest))
#5 /usr/share/mediawiki/index.php(90): MediaWiki->initialize(Object(Title),
Object(OutputPage), Object(User), Object(WebRequest))
#6 {main}
Any ideas how can we resolve this error message? I am using Mediawiki 1.12
on a Debian Linux PC.
