MediaWiki doesn't work if the mbstring.func_overload PHP is non-zero*.
Should not then the MediaWiki code set this value explicitly? I was
thinking likely in the Language.php file where it sets the internal
encoding.
Or at very least, should not an assertion of sorts be done to confirm
that this is 0?

Hello,
1) If you know an image [[image:foo.jpg]] exists, you can do
http://domain.com/wiki/Special:Filepath/foo.jpg
to download the source file, without having to calculate your own checksum
thingy to figure out which directory it's actually stored in.
Is there a similar shortcut to image thumbnails? There is thumb.php but that
bypasses the cache so it's bad, right?
And on that related note,
2) If you have a central image wiki set-up (as in Wikimedia Commons/other
Wikimedia projects), how can you check if the image being referred to is
actually on the central project or the local project? Is there a
straightforward way to do that? I can think of some roundabout ways but I
don't know a straightforward one.

They've just been waiting in a mountain for the right moment:
http://modernthings.org/
I'm gradually moving up in the world of hosting from shared accounts with no
shell access to (now) a VPS host with full control.
I would like to ask the philosophical question of whether using a table
prefix like "mw_" is of any use later? I have pretty much full control of my
box, can have as many MySQL databases as I like (including dev, test and
live ones).
It would seem to me that having completely separate databases (as opposed to
differently named tables) is the way to go for me but can anyone help out
with practical experience. Up to now I've used a prefix of mw_ and I could
continue with that or just stop.

Hello,
I am trying to delete my wiki's history
and I am using the command:
php deleteOldRevisions.php --delete
It seems to be working and it says that it found some old revisions and
is deleting them, and that it ended successfully.
But when I check my wiki the history is still there and each time I run
the script it finds the same number of old revisions all over again.
It seems that it doesn't delete the records for some reason.
Mediawiki version is 1.6.11
Please help

The basic auth extension works so easily and is very transparent.
Minus the changing passwords and what not part of things. I use it
without much editing at all. Definately worth it if you already have
your user base credentials inside apache in one way or another.

Hi,
There is no reason that compels you to use a table prefix. You need to
use a table prefix only if you want to use the same mysql database for
some other applications, or use the same db for different versions of
Mediawiki. Even if you use same database for multiple applications, it's
not necessary to use a table prefix. A table prefix will only help you
while viewing the table names-if you use a prefix, you can see all the
mediawiki tables together. Or if you want to export only mediawiki
tables using an application like phpMyAdmin from a multi-application
database, you can easily select the tables in one go, if they have a
prefix. That's it; nothing more.

This would seem to be a killer point that I haven't spotted anywhere in
the docs (and a bit of a failing!)
Right now I can't seem to get any maintenance scripts to run as I get
the following failure:
PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required 'counter.php'
(include_path='.:') in
/var/www/vhosts/xxxxxxx/httpdocs/w/maintenance/update.php
on line 2
I'm scouring the web and the archives right now but if anyone knows the
answer.....

Hi there!
I have a test installation of Mediawiki, and would like to be able to
limit access to the wiki to a closed group of people. I need the following:
* Usermanagement is handled by a moderator which creates new users and
assigns rights to them, or
* Registering to the wiki needs at least approval by an admin or moderator
* The possibility to make content public or closed, for the whole wiki,
or per page, or depending on namespaces
I know these options are available in Dokuwiki, but I would like to try
out Mediawiki and see how this works. I think all of this is possible,
but I can't figure out how to do this.
I appreciate help on any of these issues!
Thanks,
Roger
Hello,
I am having a problem. The wiki for my company (http://wiki.lormfg.com)
has stopped working. When you land on a page all you see is the title
nothing else. However, when you click the edit tab you can see what the
page is supposed to display all formatted and ready to go. Has anyone
got any ideas???
