We have a *need* to be able to access existing documentation in the
wiki. This documentation may be in the form of .doc, .xls, .odt etc.
I would like to be able to external link to these documents but have not
found a way to do this. In searching the archives I have found some
discussions but nothing definitive. We are still searching and reading
but if someone has a link that says 'hey .. stupid .. look here -->' I
would be appreciative.
What we have tried.
1 ) We know that we can 'upload' these documents into wiki by extending
the allowed 'media' types. My guess is adding all these document types
to the wiki might cause some size issues. Though I like that it notes
the changes
It is funny on the page for the uploaded document it says
IMAGE:document_name. Other than this it appears to work well. The only
problem that the users have with this is that if they want to make a
change to the document they have to save locally then upload again.
Doesn't bother me but .. users
2) We have tried adding file:// to the accepted list, and this almost
works. It shows correctly as a link (as long as I %20 all the spaces).
But the link doesn't do anything.
If in IE or FF I file:///c:/Read%20Inventory%20and%20Prices.txt in the
address bar then it opens right and displays. If it is
file://c:\Technical%20Design%20Template.dot then we get the 'open or
save' dialog box. Which is fine. If we make a change and then save we
have to direct it back to itself (opens a a new document .. not
"c:\Technical Design Template.dot".
But these external links will not work if used through a wiki page. You
can click and click and click .. but nothing happens.
I am sure that I must be missing a setting and wonder what it could be.
So as I said, if someone knows a good 'Links for dummys' link .. link me
to it.
Thanks

Hi!
We are new to PHP and mediawiki software.Guys really looking forward
to hear any idea from you that could solve the problem below:
We have added mediawiki to an existing application. The existing
application is written in perl. We want to run our own perl scripts to
check the login status of a user instead of the "log in/ create
account" in mediawiki. Our script generates HTML code which we want to
place it at the top of the mediawiki main page. We tried to call the
virtual function inside the head/body tag in monobook.php and it did
not work. We created a separate php file and embedded the virtual
function in it. The file worked great when we execute by typing in
the url but does not run when we include the php file in MonoBook.php.
we would appreciate any questions you have to get clear understanding
of our problem!
Awaiting your replies!
Thanks & Regards,
Raj.
Just use in localsettings.php:
if ($_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'] == "Put the browser that the Treo device
uses here") $wgDefaultSkin = 'skin for mobile device';
else $wgDefaultSkin = 'normal pc skin';

Hi fellow wiki-admins,
We all gotta start someplace ... here's where I'm at now:
I presume there's something painfully simple I'm missing, but I can't
for the life of me find a reference anywhere simply on how to
setup-and-configure a wiki!
For example, all I wanna do is:
1 - Sign in as admin. Is that so hard? How do I sign in as admin?
2 - Make others sign-in as lesser-editors and contributors. I need to
see how hierarchies of user-capabilities work before I go live.
3 - Lock parts of article contents so users can add to them but not
delete the locked part, admins can change anything.
4 - Change/customize a few visual things, like the sidebar.
Now, I'm not askin' you all to answer my detailed questions above
(unless you want to!).
I'm asking if anyone knows of a reference where I can look up these
kinds of (must be) precedented things. Does anyone have any leads on a
BASIC (as in "initial") MediaWiki setup-and-configure instruction
manual?
Thank you so much (conversations so far have been ... interesting - I
can't wait to understand what you're all talking about and see how you
respond here!).

That's not an appropriate title, given that it's not setting up
multiple languages in a single project at all; it's using a variant of
the "multiple databases, same code" approach.
