Hi all,
I'm a N00b, so please bear with me.
I have a need to mark certain text in my articles as non-searchable.
Are there tags in existence that I can use, or can anyone out there help
me create them? You may ask why? Good question. I am creating a
Technical solutions knowledgebase using MediaWiki technology and have
strict guidelines around content to minimise the "noise" - searchwise -
that one can get with long articles. The format is:
- Environment
- Symptoms
- Cause
- Fix
I only want the symptoms & Environment sections to be searchable, as the
"cause" only adds context to the solution and the "fix" is simply that,
and does not need to be searchable.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. If you wish to
contact me directly for details please do.
Thanks

Is there a MediaWiki add-on, or stand alone server app, that could
automatically inject RSS and other XML feeds onto the Main Page of a wiki?

I need to make some minor tweaks to the Cologne Blue skin
Some of the pages come up in the same color background as my site now v. white
Where do I change the background color of the pages in this skin so they ARE ALL
this beige color like User:WikiSysop page is. All pages in the site should be
using this background color.
Next where do I change the "Free Encyclopedia" text at? ? Thats got to go.
As a side note, the ONLY way I could get anon user blocks to work was to edit
defaultsettings.php. While that may be uber verbotten, it works, and
localsettings didn't, MW 1.5.6, so I can proceed with converting over now that
security hole is fixed. I may have found solutions to my other ban issue to
block out site thieves.

Hi,
I am quite new to mediawiki and could not find this information in the
docs. Is it possible to fold the navigation bar on the left? My bar
already gets quite long because of the topic and sub-topic structure
which I would really like to keep for my use case.
If folding should not be possible, what alternative structuring would
you suggest?
cheers,
Stephan
Hey everyone,
Is it possible to adjust the times for entries to the database? My
server runs in a different country to where I would like the times
situated. Not for individual users but for the Mediawiki system.

Hi there,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but here goes.
On Wikinews, we've started to talk about whether there could be any way
to expose unique identifiers for news articles, rather than having to
rely on page names. (See:
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Water_cooler/technical#URLs_using_IDs_…)
This is important because:
a) Without a unique identifier, it's impossible to tell when an article
has moved. This is a particular problem for the RSS feed - without a
unique ID, articles that get moved appear twice (or more).
b) It should be possible to have two articles with the same headline.
As I see it, there are two possible solutions. The first would be to
just address a) by exposing an ID in the RSS feeds (in the <guid>
sub-element of item), without altering the URLs.
The second way would be to alter the URLs so that they're at
en.wikinews.org/wiki/8986456, allowing more than one article to have the
same title.
I realise that both solutions would probably require a major re-working
of the underlying MediaWiki architecture.
Is there any chance that such a change could ever be implemented? Or are
there any other workarounds to the problem?
Cheers,
Frankie Roberto

I agree, Diego! Sometimes I find that simply writing out my question
helps me figure out the answer, but sometimes it take READING the
question on the list, and thinking, "Oh, I could help that guy!" :-)

Hi everyone, at first i'd like you to sorry my terrible english... if you
don't understand something I say, please tell me :)
I'm writing this e-mail to ask for help in the configuration of the sidebar
of mediawiki. I have modified it with success, editing the page
MediaWiki:SideBar. The changes are almost perfect, it just there is one
defect: when I go to the main page, the modifications I've done disapear...
it only hapens at the main page.
Could somebody help me? The version of mediawiki that I'm using is 1.5.6
Very thanks,

I am new at this and I am setting up my wiki, and one of the
changes to localsettings.php I'm making is that if you want to edit
a page you have to have an account. Anon can read/view all they
want, but editing is user only.
I also want to change the default skin used.
So I per the documentation I ADD:
#
# Permission keys given to users in each group.
# All users are implicitly in the '*' group including anonymous
visitors;
# logged-in users are all implicitly in the 'user' group. These will be
# combined with the permissions of all groups that a given user is
listed
# in in the user_groups table.
#
# This replaces wgWhitelistAccount and wgWhitelistEdit
#
# The following line should be commented, otherwise these
settings will
# throw away the settings on DefaultSettings.php (you probably
don't want this).
# With this line commented you will only overwrite the settings you
explicitly
# define here (that's what you probably want).
#$wgGroupPermissions = array();
$wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['createaccount'] = true;
$wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['read'] = true;
$wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['edit'] = false;
And UNCOMMENTED and CHANGED:
$wgDefaultSkin = 'cologneblue';
But these changes don't take effect? ?? ?
What step am I missing? I tried searches and didn't seem to find
an artcile that would explain what step I am missing to get these
changes to take effect.
Thanks!
