I need to change a number of system messages. I'm running dozens of
wikis that all need the same changes, so I'm hoping to avoid changing
the messages through the system messages web interface.
I found instructions for doing this at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_localization but neither method
is working.
Here's a rundown of what I've done, which might help others diagnose my
problem:
I edited language.php to display different messages.
I uploaded language.php to overwrite the old language.php in the
languages folder.
I added $wgUseDatabaseMessages = false; to localsettings.php.
Nothing changed. I refreshed, tried logging out and in and changing my
skin in preferences, trying to fix it if it were a cache problem. I'm
not yet running cache software (memcache, etc.).
So I removed the $wgUseDatabaseMessages = false; from localsettings.php.
I ran the rebuildMessages.php script from the command line, and it
displayed a message saying it was rebuilding the namespace.
Nothing changed even after refresh. Again I tried changing my skin in
preferences in case it was a cache problem. I also tried looking from a
different computer which hasn't seen the site for a few days.
If anyone who understands how language.php works could help me out I'd
be very grateful.
yeah that's the option were i enable the upload. but i want to have a
popup, when i hit the upload button, to open the site in a new window
(as a popup)
any ideas.
thanks for your help

In your LocalSetting.php, create a new line (might make sure it
doesn't
already exist first) with "$wgEnableUploads = true;" in it. I think
that's all it takes, and without it, you can't even upload by manually
entering the Special:Upload URL.

Hello all,
today i have downloaded the current beta version and have seen that
somebody already started a PostgreSQL port. Yes, i know, this one is
outdated, but is there a plan to support other databases in the feature?
According to the statements of some people in #mediawiki, it would make
sense to integrate something like a layer with virtual functions:
$dbr->getArticleText();
The function would do the job, retrieve the article in question from the
database and return it to MW. This also would allow slightly different
DDLs for every database type, using the advantages of the actual
database.
What is your opinion on this point?
Kind regards

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with your Microsoft product.
(Ferenc Mantfeld)
i modified sucessfully the sidebar as described in FAQ, by modifing
Mediawiki:Sidebar.
But for injecting some dynamic generated entries, it is a pain to code.
The need to create/modify three entries in the db (one for the link and
one for caption
and the last mod in Mediawiki:Sidebar).
Is there a way to avoid the lookup in the db for some translations or
whatever.
I mean some sort of adding
* RenderThisTitleWithoutLookup
Just imagine that the other software (in my case gallery2) takes care
about language etc. for these entries
I did it by modifying the template, but that is not a clean solution.
I did it as extension, a hack too.
Maybe an oldfashioned include of the title=>"", "href"=>"" in 1.4 is
still possible, but i had no luck adding it in the LocalSettings.php.
Any ideas?

I'd like to change the message that is emailed when a new user is
created. The current emailed message is:

The password for user "username" is now "xxx123".
You should log in and change your password now.
I'd like to add a short message that contains the URL of the Wiki homepage.
Anyone know how?
You can also use a web spider like http://www.vigos.com/products/gsitemap/
to crawl your site and generate a sitemap. I haven't tried this with
mediawiki however so ymmv.
Alistair.

I have made a script that generates a sitemap for a 1.5 installation.
Changing it to work with 1.4.x should be trivial. See it in action at
http://wiki.case.edu/misc/googleSiteMap.php. The source code is at

Hello,
Can anyone of you help me with google sitemaps and wikipedia ?
I need to create a sitemap (xml file) for a specific wiki, but i dont have much
idea about wiki,
thanks
Rajiv
(I guess I appended my last post onto another thread somehow, so I'll
give it another try...this is supposed to be the beginning of a new thread!)
I want to learn how to make a content management system for a website
focusing on the animal kingdom. It will be somewhat similar to the
Animal Diversity Web. Here's an example of their pages:
http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Canis_lupus…
But my site will have more features, and the appearance will be more
refined. The body will consist of three columns, with advertising in the
right column. I would like the URLs to display like this:
www.geozoo.org/stacks/Carnivora/www.geozoo.org/stacks/Canidae/www.geozoo.org/stacks/Canis_lupus/
Would MediaWiki be a good choice for a project like this? I was
thinking about trying Mambo, but I haven't even received answers to my
most basic questions on their users list. I downloaded and installed
Plone, which is what the Animal Diversity Web, but it's a can of worms -
not even remotely user friendly.
Thanks.

uploading any kind of images cause an abort:
the function guessMimeType() alway delivers tex/plain.
The images are correct png / gif or jpg.
I tested it on a fresh mediawiki 1.5 Beta4
on different servers with php 5 and apache 1.3
ideas?

Hello,
I have a mediawiki 1.3.9 setup with a number of pages. This mediawiki
was setup to show the potential of a wiki site to the management of my
department.
Now they have decided to setup a mediawiki for the whole company to
use to see if people will start using it.
Now I want to "move" the pages from my old wiki to the new server. Is
there an easy way of doing this? Can I use the Export/Import XML
functions? and how about the uploaded images? are they included in the
XML export/import?
Should I first upgrade the old instalation to a 1.5beta4 also? and
than do something on database level?
There are around 100 images in the wiki and around 150 user pages
Thanks,
Hein Rigolo
