Wiki is very different from the rest of the web technologies,
and impressive too ;-)
I am currently looking at the possiblity of using wiki for
my upcoming site, which would be like online documentation.
However, i am going crazy over the design stuff ... eg..
should i make this category or a section , this and that...
So, my questions to peers who are already using wiki is that
how difficult it is to change the orientation of your site
once you get started. What is the general practise : start small
and keep changing stuff , or make a well designed skeleton and
then add to it.
just a n00b, who is confused with all the wiki options :-p
Thanks in Advance,

I'm looking for a new host for my wiki, and I think I narrowed it down
to Pair networks. The one red flag that pops up for me is that they
have a limit of 200MB per MySQL database, after which they could start
deducting from my overall disk quota. Not a problem as far as I'm
concerned, but I don't really have any idea how big the databases get.
Currently, my database is about 3.5 MB, representing about 155 pages
or so. I've been seeding this, meaning I've been doing most of the
work myself. Now I'm ready to let more people get involved, and I'm
wondering if I'm going to smack my head against that 200MB limit
anytime soon.
Here are the relevant bullet points from Pair's policy page. Would
anyone out there think that this could be an issue for a site that
will likely get moderate use?
----------------------
* Databases are limited to 15 concurrent connections. While this limit
is enforced separately for each username connecting to a database, it
is against policy to attempt to use the three usernames alloted to a
database to circumvent this limit.
* Advanced Account holders are limited to 1500 queries per hour, of
which at most 750 can alter data in the database (such as INSERT,
UPDATE, and DELETE queries).
* Each individual database is allotted up to 200MB (megabytes) of disk
space. pair Networks reserves the right to apply disk usage in excess
of 200MB against the account's disk quota.
--------------------------
Thanks for any help. Also, I've researched web hosts until my eyes
are crossed. If anyone has any recommendations for a reliable host,
I'd be grateful.

Hello,
Can someone tell me how to get rid of the text "The Free Encyclopedia"
in the front page ( Main Page) . I removed the entry in Language.php but its not taking effect. Where else do I need to modify ?
Any help and suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Vani
Hi,
I tried installing MediaWiki 1.3.9 as downloaded from sourceforge.net on a MySQL
3.x/PHP 4.x system under Linux.
I uploaded the already decompressed files via ftp, went to config/ and filled in
the form. PHP is in safe mode so I followed the recommendation of chmodding the
images/ directory to 666 (world writeable) for the installation. I also changed
the config/ dir to be world writeable and then submitted the form.
The result was a blank page - and a created LocalSettings.php in config/ which I
moved to the MediaWiki root. I checked whether the database had been changed
and there were a couple of tables that had been created.
The INSTALL file instructed me to go to the MediaWiki root with a web browser
now - the message I got upon that was:
Warning: realpath() has been disabled for security reasons in
/../mediawiki/PHPTAL-NP-0.7.0/libs/PHPTAL/SourceResolver.php on line 54
Any ideas?
Thank in advance,
Thomas

Dear all,
I have been asked by many of you during the last days, whether or when
ENotif and EAuthent for MediaWiki 1.3.9 or 1.4 will become available.
The only answer I can give you at the moment is: the code was put into
CVS HEAD on 18.12.2004 by Brion; Brion has made some changes, and I
submitted some bugfixes to Brion's changes, which not all have been put
into the CVS yet. As I still have no access to the CVS, I wait until
this happens or until I am allowed to commit them.
(The http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1370 needs to be
patched to automatically re-enable ENotifs for a page - when you have
visited it)
Those being interested in a mw1.3.9+EN/EA or mw1.4+EN/EA can send me an
e-mail.
Tom
Is there a simple way to remove items from the list of special pages (in
MW v1.4 beta5) ?
Can something from specialpage.php be manipulated or maybe put into
localsettings for customization?
Thanks :-)

Using the wiki RSS capability, we are syndicating our Newpages titles to our main (non-wiki) page using a 3rd-party feed service. Unfortunately the feed has bogged down the service, and they've had to stop their crawlers from checking it for updates. The problem appears to be a combination of some very long articles (the entire article appears in the RSS feed description block) and the large number of articles that are being output to the feed.
Is there a way to restrict the RSS output so as not to have the article contents included, and/or a way to restrict the number of articles that are output? If it's not settable, a suggested hack would be much appreciated. I've looked at Feed.php but I have no idea how to modify it. We are running 1.3.7.
Thanks,
Michelle
I get this problem when I try to look at my wiki's RSS feed:
XML Parsing Error: junk after document element
Location:
http://www.avantlabs.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges&feed=rss
Line Number 433, Column 7:</rss><br />
------^
And I have no idea what it means/how to fix it. Anyone want to give me
some hints while I'm trying to figure it out?
Thanks
Hi,
in v1.4beta5 one has to insert a space, if one likes to use advanced
subscriptions of thumbnails like this:
[[Bild:030128.jpg|thumb|320px|[http://www.foo.de www.foo.de] ]]
^
Otherwise the parser omitts the last bracket and displays it somewhere on the
site instead...

has anyone written a plugin that will allow me to grab images?
eg if i want to write something up now, about an image I see on the
web somewhere that may dissappear tmrw, i currently have to save the
image, then upload it, remember the [[image..] link text, go back edit
page etc.
instead:
<grab>http://domain/some.jpg</grab>
would on first time encountering the image copy it locally. next time
display it from the cache...
leaving aside the copyright question, i have seen this feature in other wikis.
Also is there a repository of mediaWiki extensions? A little googling
didnt seem to turn up a clear winner...just a few random things ppl
have done.
