Do other folks get this error? I've had to turn stoplists off to
prevent all searches resulting in this text being placed on the page.
My system has php Version 4.3.3 and mediaWiki: 1.3.0beta4

I ran into the same problem and found the answer on the
mediawiki.sourcefore.org bug list by searching for "pear_error".
The solution is to alter the file PHPTAL-NP-0.7.0/libs/PHPTAL.php
and replace the line:
define('PHPTAL_DEFAULT_CACHE_DIR', '/tmp/');
to point to a new /tmp directory I made within the wiki's file
tree.
At first it didn't work, until I remembered to make my local /tmp
directory writeable...

Hi,
I've noticed that the login cookie does not last very long -- usually no more
than a day. I can see how for security reasons you may not want it to last
forever, but I'd like to extend its life a bit, maybe to a week or so.
I noticed that in include/DefaultSettings.php there is a line
$wgCookieExpiration = 2592000;
which if it's in seconds would be 30 days. However my login cookie never gets
set for that long. Any ideas why that may be?
Thanks,
matias
PS: I know that be default the cookie is set so that if you set it at
seattlewiki.org it won't be sent for www.seattlewiki.org. However this behavior
happens even if I always use on or the other. I've also just now set the cookie
domain so that it works for both cases above.
I've posted a question at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:MediaWiki_file_usage
which reads as follows. Any hints on this? The webpage seems to be
incorrect. (My reason for looking into this is that I want to do
multiple file uploads, but the 'bot' scheme isn't working for me so I'm
trying to read the code and docs to learn how to automate this a bit
better.)
I'm confused about the image filename hashing. Is the following
statement correct? Filenames are MD5-hashed, and since many filesystems
don't handle large directories well, uploads are broken into
subdirectories with the first and first two hex digits of the hash, eg:
upload/7/79/Wikicontestlogo598932.jpg. I tested this by downloading the
linked-to file. The result was
ee3fe2bfeffd646b0bee15265af96c37 Wikicontestlogo598932.jpg
which should have gone into a directory e/e3 instead of the directory
7/79 as indicated. --DK 18:52, 2004 Jul 21 (UTC)

Hello,
I've looked through the MediaWiki User Guide & everything else I
could find, but I've either missed or just don't understand
something.
How/where do I create a new "look" to a local copy of a
Wikipedia? By that I mean where do I put my HTML if I want to
duplicate my current site's look & layout? I've seen the skins
doc., but still don't understand where my HTML will go. I assume
I combine my desired HTML with MediaWiki "tags", but can't find
the info on that.
Is there a "Special" page where I can create a new template?
Any help to get me started is appreciated!
Thank you,
Jeff
Hello,
Looking at the templates directory in Media Wiki,
there are two,
paddington.tpl and montparnasse.tpl
What do these do, and if we modify them, or make new
tpl files, then how can we specify which one MediaWiki
uses?
Thanks

Hello,
I'm very new to PHP and CSS, so I was hoping someone
could give me a hand! I managed to install Mediawiki,
and for some test data, I uploaded the WIkiquote info
into the Cur tables, so far so good!
Now, how do I start customizing? Where are the
template files or css files?
How can I change the mediawiki logo to my logo?
How can I customize which elements of the menubar
appear? For example, if I wanted to remove the menu
that says "discuss this page" how would I do that?
Also, what does [[Template:Gnunote]] mean?
I tried to edit my wikipage/Template:Gnunote to add a
GNU note there, but at the bottom of every page
[[Template:Gnunote]] appears.
And, what is {{qotd}} and How do I insert my own
Quote of the Day?
Thanks for all your help!!!

I have many images to upload, so the web-based method is too slow.
I'm hoping I can do the work with a shellscript instead. (It's dozens
of times faster to use the unix system and a good text editor to
generate a list of filenames and content for the corresponding
webpages, than it is to upload things one by one.)
Is there a standalone script to do this, or should I write one, based
on the includes/SpecialUpload.php file?

1. 1.26 is great, but I want the latest! I would rather not have to
reenter all my wiki data - what's the best way of transferring it
across? I've managed to get the XML export to work, but how to I
_import_ it to the new site?
2. I don't find it very easy to search for support on the metawiki using
the search What's the easiest way of finding whether somebody has
answered my question about mediawiki previously?
Thanks as ever
Nick
