MediaWiki 1.4beta2 is an experimental release, to help flush out
remaining major problems in the code prior to a final public 1.4.0
release. It is not recommended to use this beta on a public site unless
you're familiar with MediaWiki innards and are willing and able to help
diagnose and fix problems that come up.
All beta1 users should upgrade as soon as possible.
This release fixes separate input validation issues with image gallery
rendering and PostgreSQL. Other fixes include Recentchanges in PHP5,
whitelist-edit mode, table prefixes, page renaming, and other issues.
Additionally, startup time for cached page views is slightly faster.

I installed 1.4-beta1 for a small-scale trial. When I go to
[[Special:Allmessages]], it gives this error:
A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in
the software. The last attempted database query was:
SELECT cur_namespace,cur_title FROM cur WHERE cur_namespace IN (8, 9)
from within function "". MySQL returned error "1146: Table 'johnyu.cur'
doesn't exist".
"johnyu" is my database name. I'm using the new table prefix feature.
Not sure if it's related.

If I'd like to do very simple modification to the footer (e.g. Add a
<br> before the "about" link), which file and in which section of that
file should I look at?
Another unrelated question. Wikipedia.org has a line "From Wikipedia,
the free encyclopedia." displayed on every page. But I don't see such
message displayed on my wiki, even I've customized the
Mediawiki:Fromwikipedia. Is there a flag I have to turn on? I couldn't
see anything in LocalSettings.php.
Thanks

hi again
Is it possible to download all the docs in the
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents
(because i have a very bad connection, and only one or twice a week,
when everything goes fine)
Thanks
Alain
Thanks Jamie, that works a charm!
You don't have any idea how I can resolve my css issues as well by any
chance?
"2. I also need to include some custom css code for this extension. I've
done this by adding it to the monobook css file, but I'd prefer an option
that wont get broken whenever MediaWiki is updated. Is there an approved
method of adding custom content within the <head></head> section?"
;-)

Subject: Re: [Mediawiki-l] custom extension including <script> tags
Try placing the code in a seperate file and referencing it in a single
line. This works for me:
function renderRandomQuote( $input )
{
$output = '<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/xml/spotlight_js.php"></script>
<a href="http://www.chiefdelphi.com/"
title="http://www.chiefdelphi.com/"><img
src="http://furc.zapto.org/wiki/stylesheets/monobook/external.png"></a><span
class="urlexpansion"> (<i>http://www.chiefdelphi.com/</i>)</span>';
return $output;
}
(This is actually in use on "http://furc.zapto.org/wiki/", using the
tag <randomquote>) I think the code that handles the output doesn't
preserve things within <script> tags, but it will preserve attributes.

Salvete,
I've spent the better part of two weeks refactoring
WikiTeX in C, and we're primed to start hacking Zend.
Would it hinder our efforts to get WikiTeX on Commons
if we packaged it as a stand-alone PHP extension?

Hy everybody.
I just found this site: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/DocBook_XML_export
But I am not able to find such a option in mediawiki? Is there the
possibility to export the wiki to docbook format?
Regards
Florian
If you look in LocalSettings.php, the mysql password the wiki uses is in the variables $wgDBuser and $wgDBpassword. You should be able to use those.

I guess that is the problem. AFAIK i put the good name/passwd , _but_
i was asked so many admin/passwd (apache, sql, mediawiki) that i'm not
sure i put the right username. (for the passwd i put the same
everywhere ;) I left the default names everywhere (on debian sarge)
here i said :
$wgDBadminuser = "mysql";
$wgDBadminpassword = XXXXX
is that the good user ?
thanks

Hello,
I would like to restrict certain users in modifying certain pages or links in mediawiki. Is it possible to implement ACLs. Can someone tell me how can I do this ?
Thanks in advance
Vani
I'm in the process of building two (non-commercial) sites. Both are not
strictly Wikis, but I think MediaWiki would be a great platform for them due
to its enormous flexibility and the elegance of the whole concept.
These projects, however, require features that might not be available or
difficult to implement in MediaWiki. I have browsed the documentation, but
the following questions remain.
So - how would you approach the following problems/situations:
1) Ranking:
Is there a mechanism to let users rank a page and display "top ten" lists of
pages based on this ranking? I'm aware of "Popular Pages", but explicit
ranking would be a welcome addition (see next question).
2) Collaborative Filtering:
Is there a way to give users a list of pages "similar" to those they have
given a high ranking - based on the rankings of other users?
3) Multilingual Templates:
If I want to present multilingual content: Can I have language-specific
templates, i.e. is there a way to tell MediaWiki that it should use template
"Content_IT" when the content of the page is in Italian?
4) Importing and exporting pages:
How can I (mass-)import or export pages as e.g. plain XHTML files or in CSV
format? For example, I might want to add a huge DMOZ-style categories tree
from an external source.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Documentation:Administration says "[...]
you'll have to write appropriate scripts on your own. As far as we know,
there are no general-user ready-to-run scripts available for this purpose."
Does this means I have to fiddle with the actual database? Say it ain't so
... :/
And finally, a slightly exotic wish:
5) Mail Gateway:
Is there a way to for users to request pages from the server via E-Mail
(e.g. by putting the topic you are looking for in the subject line), so
these pages are sent back to them via mail as plain text messages?
(I'm aware this is far from the core functionality, but it would be useful
for the project I have in mind. Maybe someone can suggest an add-on to do
this.)
I am not a developer, but maybe you can point me in the direction of people
or technologies who can achieve what I am looking for.
Thank you for your help.
