Hi all,
Two new images for your perusal, both by Stefan Weber. I think Stefan
is also new to Wikimedia, so welcome, Stefan.
R1-28 - Cone clutch
https://jira.toolserver.org/browse/PGIP-54http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Cone_clutch.svg
R1-30 - Császár polyhedron
https://jira.toolserver.org/browse/PGIP-56http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Csaszar_polyhedron.ogg
This is our second OGG animation, very different to the first one
<https://jira.toolserver.org/browse/PGIP-26>. I am really impressed by
the animators' creativity and skill.
To be honest, for animations I thought people would do animated GIFs,
those awful things. :)
For OGG animations it is a bit more difficult to judge the "correct
rendering" aspect, because MediaWiki's in-browser OGG player is not as
robust as its SVG rendering, from my observation. (I can't even get
the videos to play at all because of some Java thing...)
Anyway for the OGG animations I think the best way to evaluate them is
after downloading them and playing them on your own machine. If you
have trouble playing this format, I strongly recommend VLC media
player, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Hi all,
Would people find it useful if I post a link to this list, when an
image is submitted for review?
I can post the link to the image and also the link to its JIRA page,
where comments about quality and accuracy can be left.
I'm happy to do that but will people find the list becomes too "noisy"?

Thanks for the kind words, Stefan and Liam. :)
I have some good news before I go to bed... JIRA is working properly now!
So now you should see the "Assign to me" links in the menu. Now you
can choose requests yourself without needing to make a comment and let
me update it.
I assigned (in JIRA) the 15 or so requests that had already been chosen.
When you have an image assigned to you, you should see a new link in
the left menu "Begin review". You should click on this only after you
have uploaded the image you created to Commons, and posted a link to
it on JIRA.
I created some extra "test" issues, so feel free to experiment with these.
<https://jira.toolserver.org/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?reset=true&&pid=1019…>
But if you make a mistake on a "real" one it's not a big deal, I can
easily help you fix it. So please don't be afraid of JIRA :)
cheers all,
Brianna

Hi,
I created a new page on meta:
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Philip_Greenspun_illustration_project/Get_in…>
It lists ways that people can help take part in this project. Most of
them are not about creating illustrations! :)
There are probably more that I've forgotten right now, too. Please add
to the list if you think of them.
There is also a section where you can sign your name if you're
interested to help out in some way.
thanks,
Brianna

This should actually be point 1, imo. However, since there appears to be no way to correct inaccuracies, what's the point? I was interested in this project and willing to spend some time with it because of repeated serious problems with biological illustrations on en.Wikipedia. These problems are then transferred to other language Wikis. But my commenting on problems with an image got me the usual uber-Wiki-I-am-your-daddy-I-will-now-scold-you response. I'm tired off having all of these cyber daddies who want to lord it over me that I'm not obsessed with slapping Wikipedia policy around at people.
I can't imagine why there would not only not be a procedure in place whereby people who are not professional illustrators, but do know biology well enough to correct illustrations, could have a part BEFORE an image gets put up on Wikipedia.
This is apparently not the case. No part of the project currently involves accuracy, therefore, please keep the inaccurate images off of en and all other Wikipedias and off of commons, until this issue is addressed.
Feel free to remove me from this list. I can't imagine anything that could make my experience on Wikipedia any worse than it already has been until now I'm faced with watching a bunch of bad illustrations being created to make Wikipedia's science even worse off than it is. Someone ought to refund Greenspun's money, though. I'm betting that's not what he intended to spend it on.

Hi,
Wow, after just three days, we have our first submission!
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Wine_grape_diagram_en.svg>
for
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Philip_Greenspun_illustration_project/Round_…>
Great stuff. LadyofHats does set the standard high. :)
So, illustrators:
To submit an illustration for review (ie, as fulfulling a request),
you just need to upload it to Wikimedia Commons and then leave a
comment on the issue page in JIRA. I will then set STATUS: "In Review"
for that issue. (If JIRA was working properly you would normally do
this yourself. :))
After being "In review", issues can go to "Accepted" or "Rejected".
It's quite common that after doing a first version of an image, some
small details need to be changed, so while this is going on the issue
stays "in review". Issues are only likely to go to "Rejected" if
1) The image is not the illustrator's original work (ie, you must list
your references)
2) The image doesn't match against published reference works and the
illustrator is unwilling to modify it so
3) The image doesn't render correctly on MediaWiki and the illustrator
is unwilling to modify it so.
These are the three "deal breaker" issues as detailed at
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Philip_Greenspun_illustration_project/Guidel…>
Beyond this, I hope illustrators will be happy to do the usual
"tweaking" and keep in line with common good SVG practices such as
keeping all text as text elements (not paths).
So the review is decided by the Review group. I need to revive them
after a few months waiting. :) While an illustration is in review,
*everyone is welcome to comment on issues regarding the quality and
accuracy of the illustration.* Please do this on JIRA so the Review
group can take your comments into consideration. (You don't need a
JIRA account to leave a comment.) This is actually a really helpful
thing you can do -- look at textbooks, look at the listed references,
see how they compare. Make sure if it looks good to say so, as well as
if you see something that seems wrong. I hope images will spend no
more than 2 weeks in review.
Of course the great thing about SVGs is that they're easy to fix :)
I am sure there will be lots of specifics that we can negotiate as we go.
Once the round is complete, I will contact illustrators to arrange
payment. Payment is via Paypal -- if you don't have one already, you
will need a Paypal account.
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Philip_Greenspun_illustration_project/Payment>
thanks,
Brianna
