Greetings, everyone!
The WMF Inuka team [1] is exploring having the Wikistories tool [2] on
Commons, so we want to get your feedback.
*Our proposal*
The Inuka team believes the Wikistories tool would significantly increase
our projects' visual form of knowledge if we introduce a Wikistories
workflow in WikiCommons. The above is because the Commons is a repository
of freely licensed media files that is discoverable across other projects
and languages. We have outlined our goals for this initiative on the
project page [3], and we are optimistic about a good outcome. However, the
Wikistories on Commons initiative is still a proposal that will require the
WikiCommons community's feedback/ input on our design explorations before
we commit to the work.
*Our request *
In the next three weeks, the Inuka team would want you as a member of the
Commons community to:
- Read more about the initiative.
- Attend our proposed office hours, where we will present our design
exploration and discuss our plan with this proposal.
- Give feedback on this initiative and share your input about the design
exploration on the talk page [4] we have created.
We have provided three spots for office hours.
- Wednesday, 26th October at 10:00 UTC [5]
- Saturday, 29th October at 15:00 UTC [6]
- Monday 31st October at 06:00 UTC [7]
Please click on the date that works for you and register to attend the
office hour. If you can't attend, that is fine. However, we will appreciate
your feedback about the design exploration [8] and the Wikistories on
Commons proposal on the talk page.
We, the Inuka team, are excited about this work's possibilities, and we
look forward to having you all onboard at every phase.
Thank you!

Hi Wikimedians,
Greetings from the Wiki Loves Butterfly team.
As you might know, for the last 6 years, we have been documenting butterfly
taxons endemic to eastern and north-eastern part of India through the Wiki
Loves Butterfly project. Our aim has been to increase the amount of free
license materials along with enrichment of related content on different
Wikimedia sites. Our project was previously supported by 4 Rapid Grants and
currently the fifth phase is running under the Project Grants.
Since the beginning of the project in 2016, we have gained a considerable
amount of expertise, maturity and confidence to successfully plan and
execute field-documentations and expand our area of activity in remote deep
forests of north-east India. We are now applying for the Wikimedia
Community Fund so that we can expand our activities in our next phase to
bring more quantity and quality to the topic.
You can find our fund proposal here -

Hi everyone,
Tomorrow is the launch of the Wikimedia sound logo
<https://soundlogo.wikimedia.org/> contest and we couldn’t be more excited.
We'll be in session soon and accepting submissions.
On behalf of the organizing team and community liaisons, we are grateful to
Commons community members and others who participated in the different
phases of this project – from an initial concept exploration to a contest
proposal – providing us with valuable guidance to help shape an open, global
contest <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo>. With
so much expertise in international photography contests and visual logo
searches in the movement, we are curious to learn how sound and audio
production will play out for us, in harmony with our values.
This is just a heads up and a thank you note. More information to come.
We'd love to welcome scores of submissions from around the world, so please
help the contest call vibrate through your networks. And of course, submit
one yourself. There are free and open source tools
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo/Sound_collaborati…>
that can help us capture sound and create that unique sound logo for our
movement. And you don't have to be pitch perfect, we'll be having an audio
production drop-in clinic
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo#Music_Production_…>
with our expert partner MassiveMusic on 29 September @ 15:00 UTC. We'd love
to hear from you.
Ok, I think I have included enough sound-related puns in this email.
Wishing you all well and once again, a heartfelt thank you.
On behalf of the sound logo team,
Mehrdad

Hello all!
We had an incident over this weekend where the updater to Wikimedia Commons
Query Service (WCQS) was broken for about a day and a half [1]. The root
cause seems to be MediaInfo on Commons allowing entities to share statement
IDs. This should be invalid and would cause the WCQS Updater to crash. A
work around is in place and updates have been backfilled.
Thanks for your patience!
Guillaume

Hello! My apologies if you see similar announcements across platforms, we
are hoping to reach as many interested folks as possible.
We are having a community conversation and demonstration of a new tool in
development, View it!. Please join us (anyone is allowed to attend) on
Wednesday, August 31st at 12 pm EST <https://www.worldtimebuddy.com/>. If
you’re interested in learning more but are unable to attend, please feel
free to email me, or visit our Meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/View_it!_Tool>and sign up for updates (or
beta testing).
View it! is a tool that will show Wikipedia users (editors and hopefully
readers, too) relevant Wikimedia Commons media depicting - or otherwise
related to - the article they are viewing.
The number of images displayed in a Wikipedia article is finite and highly
curated by editors; through View it! users will have access to the full
catalog of images available on Wikimedia Commons. View it! will increase
discoverability of Wikimedia Commons uploads and encourage contributors to
utilize Commons and structured data
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data>.
Please join Dominic Byrd-McDevitt (User:Dominic
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dominic>), Kevin Payravi (
User:SuperHamster <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:SuperHamster>), and
Jamie Flood (User:JamieF <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:JamieF>) to
share more about the vision for View it! and have a community conversation
about functionality of the tool and suggestions for structured data to be
utilized.
We look forward to chatting with you and hope you’ll join us!
Thank you,
Dominic, Kevin, & Jamie
Hi all,
Hope you have been well! We have just released v4.0 of the Commons Android
app to production on Google Play - this version includes tons of new
features (a map displaying nearby Commons pictures, custom SPARQL queries,
user profiles, and a custom picture selector), as well as fixes for major
bugs such as the "date uploaded" bug. The app can be downloaded from the
Play Store[1] or directly from our GitHub repository[2].
I should probably also add that this will likely be my last release - I am
currently transitioning to a new career, and will be stepping down from the
role of project lead, which I have held for the past 6 years. I intend to
stick around on a volunteer basis, but the amount of time that I can put
into the app from now on will be much more limited. I have discussed this
with the app's community, and I believe that a new grant team might be
emerging, and one of the volunteers might step up to take on the project
lead role.
Thank you very much for the support that you have all shown to the Commons
app over the years. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with all of you
- I have learned so much and met so many amazing people in the Wikimedia
community, and I certainly hope to continue being part of it. I also hope
that the app and the community surrounding it may have benefited from my
work here, and that the new team will be able to bring it to places that I
might not have ever foreseen.
Best regards,
Josephine (User: Misaochan)

Hello everyone,
We would like to extend an invitation to Wikimedia Commons community members to attend two sound-related events at this year’s [Wikimania, the Festival Edition](https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania). The first is an interactive sound logo production masterclass with sound logo experts on Thursday, August 11 from 13:10-14:00 UTC. The second is the Wikimedia sound logo roundtable on Sunday, August 14 from 10:30-11:20 UTC. This will be a forum to discuss the Wikimedia sound logo and find opportunities to collaborate ahead of the global contest launch.
Please check the [Wikimania 2022 wiki](https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania) for the most [up to date program](https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Program).
We hope to see you there!
