[cc commons-l, please keep the discussion on wikitech-l]
As you may know we use ugly uselang hacks on Commons to create our own
distinct upload forms. I want this functionality in MediaWiki.
HTMLForm provides a great way to abstractify form construction by
providing a descriptor that can be transformed into an HTML
presentation. What I want is to have allow Commons admins to create
custom uploads forms by providing a descriptor suitable for HTMLForm,
which is then translated to HTML and accessable via
Special:Upload/formname.
The question is how to allow admins to edit this descriptor. In PHP
this is simply an array. We could allow input as JSON or XML in a
MediaWiki: namespace message, which is then translated to an array and
then fed to HTMLForm. Or it could be only GUI editable via a Special
page and the forms can be stored elsewhere in the database.
Opinions, ideas?
Cheers,
Bryan
Hello,
i would like to let you know about this very new platform I launched. It
aims to fund, license, release professional CC/GFDL works:
https://yooook.net/
You are welcome to tell me critics, and let people around you who might
be interested in it know about.
Thank you for your interest.
Best regards,
Camille.

Subject: open IRC meeting w/ Wikimedia Trustees: this Friday, 1800 UTC
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List
<foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, Wikipedia list
<wikipedia-l(a)wikimedia.org>
Hello,
We wanted to have a more informal forum for discussing Wikimedia
issues with Board members, so the three new Wikimedia Trustees (Arne,
Matt, and myself) are hosting an open meeting on IRC in #wikimedia
this Friday.
Where : #wikimedia
When : Friday September 11, 1800-1900 UTC
(11:00-12:00 PST / 14:00-15:00EST / 20:00-21:00CEST)
Other Board members will hopefully be there as well; we picked a time
when we knew all of the new members could attend. Please join with
any thoughts or questions you have for the Board or about Wikimedia in
general. If you'd like to see something on the agenda, whether or not
you can attend in person, please add it here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_meetings#September_open_meeti…
Since we only have an hour, we will try to keep to the agenda. New
topics brought up after noon UTC the day of the meeting will be
addressed on-wiki if we run out of time.
I'm looking for someone to help moderate the chat. If interested,
please reply offlist. Thanks!
SJ
Hi all,
I am looking at the Wikimania videos right now - great stuff!
I noticed that many talks have the slides uploaded as PDFs as well,
where we can browse to individual pages within the PDF.
Also, I noticed that there is a large blank space right of a playing video.
So, why not have the appropriate slide show next to the video as it plays?
All we'd need is some JavaScript interpreting a template that has
timestamp-to-page values.
I'd have done it but I couldn't figure out how to query the state
(playtime) of the FireFox <video> tag.
Anyone know how to?
Cheers,
Magnus
Could be a nice idea!

Subject: [Foundation-l] Proposal: Commons Force
To: foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
I'd like to propose a project I tentatively refer to as "Commons
Force" (Meta link: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CommonsForce).
Commons Force is a wiki used to coordinate a force of volunteers who
*actively* educate people about the concepts of public domain and the
Creative Commons.
That entails those volunteers systematically searching the internet
and media archives such as Flickr for PD and CC material wrongly
labelled as being "copyright, all rights reserved" and the likes, and
notifying the person who wrongly used the label about the problem
(using whatever means are provided by the site), along with a link to
a small wiki designed exclusively to educate about PD and CC.
The goal is *not* to threaten those people in any way, and messages
sent will never contain any threats, whether legal, moral or personal.
Rather, the project aims to educate the many, many internet users who
don't worry about rights at all, because they truly don't know jack
about them. They might know copyright, but overestimate its reach
and/or not be aware that there are alternatives. When being told about
the wide world of rights and how copyright alternatives like Creative
Commons can promote access to free knowledge they might consider
re-licensing most or all of their works.
In essence, what's being proposed is a Wiki that acts as a complement
to the Open-source Ticket Request System on Commons. Instead of
receiving license information about media on Commons, the idea is to
send out license information about media on the internet to those whom
it concerns.
Since this would obviously promote both the free access to knowledge
and people's awareness of key open content concepts like PD and CC,
the proposal is in line with the very heart of Wikimedia's goals.
Your opinions & input are more than welcome at the project's
discussion page, http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:CommonsForce.
Cheers,
Jovan Cormac

Mayo Wynne Baxter appear to be hosting a free copyright seminar in
Brighton Sep 30th 5.30-7.30pm. If there is someone in that area may be
worth going along to see what the professional photography industry is
thinking about at the moment:

Hi everyone,
In a couple of days from now (three?) Wikimedia Commons will hit the 5
million uploaded files (see the statistics at
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Statistics).
At that point Wikimedia Commons also exists almost 5 years. Wouldn't it
be nice to send out a real press release to a couple of news agencies to
get some press attention? 5 million files is a big milestone and should
get some coverage.
Maarten
I just tried to watch some presentation videos from Wikimania.
Some had very weak sound, some had no sound in the first minutes,
some only played the first minute and then stopped. I don't think
the Wikimania videos are unique in having such problems. Video is
new to Commons, and the expert contributors are more familiar with
still images.
How can we learn to make better videos? Are there some good
instructions? Perhaps a free instruction video (Wikibooks, but a
video instead of a book) on how to produce good videos is what we
need. In fact, the English Wikibooks has a title on "Video
Production", http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Video_Production but it
doesn't have a clear focus (pun not intended). It starts out with
discussing satellite TV and has long sections on file formats in
different operating systems.
There is a help page on Commons for converting video to the Ogg
Theora format, but that is only the last step in a long chain.
Given that video is new, how can we find and rate videos, nominate
"good/featured videos", and give advice on how to improve quality?
Is the Commons village pump enough for this? Commons has a
separate graphics village pump. Do we also need a separate video
village pump?
Current digital video cameras use hard disks or memory cards,
instead of tape cassettes. Many new models cost less than 300
euro (or dollars), some as little as 120 euro (memory card perhaps
not included). Some have a special "Youtube mode", and I guess
that kind of usage is what drives the price down. What models are
good, and what should one watch out for?
We can find free still photos on Flickr and copy them to Commons.
Is there somewhere we can find free videos and copy them? Yes, at
the Internet Archive. Somewhere else?
