It's not a problem, since it's not like we'll ever use it on Wikimedia
anyway. To be perfectly blunt about it; if other people want to
install inefficient custom code on their wikis...well, it's their
servers, their requirements, and their problem.
If the code were slightly rearranged, so that it begins all of the
connections simultaneously and only then selects on all of them, it'd
at least get the runtime down to 2 seconds in the worst case. As it
is, it's 2*(number of host-ports).
