Outsider's view: you can achieve "logicalness" by using ...1:
(currently defined terms asterisked)
*CURRENTDAY -> no zero
CURRENTDAY1 -> no zero
*CURRENTDAY2 -> leading zero
*CURRENTMONTH -> zero
CURRENTMONTH1 -> no zero
CURRENTMONTH2 -> leading zero
Then, if you deprecate the forms 'CURRENTDAY' and 'CURRENTMONTH', you
have achieved spiritual consistency.

This was pretty much what I was suggesting. =) I just think
CURRENTMONTH2 would be the logical choice (given the
CURRENTDAY/CURRENTDAY2 naming).
