I wouldn't recommend that. It might work, or you might run into strange
problems, depending on the tolerance of the software. Some 32 bit
programms behave very bad if they notice that the underlying kernel and
libc are not i686 but amd64, despite the theoretical compatibility. This
"multi-arch" stuff is essentially what the Debian amd64 people wanted to
achive, but even they have given up and now recommend either running a
pure 64 bit environment or pure 32 bit, but not mixed. You also would
have to recompile MySQL for 64 bit in order to use more than 2 GB RAM
--> need to install a complete 64 bit toolchain and whatnot... I think
it would be easier if you start from scratch by installing a pure 64 bit
distro, but that would mean downtime. We should wait with this until the
other Opteron is in place.
