I know automatic spell checking is just a tool. But we
still have
spelling errors being found now, years after they were first inserted

essay of my own over ten times and not notice the most obvious
spelling errors. An automatic spell checker would just draw our
attention to possibly overlooked errors. How many spelling errors
would you find on Britannica?
Spell checkers didn't exist when the first edition of Britannica came out.
It's always more difficult to find these spelling errors on your own
work, but those same errors tend to stand out when you check another
person's work. Maybe you should be letting someone else spell check
your work.
